Quite often we sing a hymn that reveals for us a marvelous quality of our Catholic Church, “One Bread, one Body, one Lord of All.” The first reading chosen for the Solemnity of Christ Our King asks us not to forget the “oneness” of our Church. Leaders of the many tribes of Israel gathered at Hebron, burial place of Abraham, Isaac, Joseph, and their wives. It is very close to to Bethlehem, “House of Bread,” where the unifier, King David was born. And also Jesus of one Faith, one Baptism who continues to offer himself to us in the Holy Bread as one Body, Blood, Soul, and one Divinity, one Shepherd King who leads us on our way to heaven.
St. Paul to the Church at Colossae likely came to the aid of a convert from the nearby more important city of Ephesus. What this friend of Paul had taught rightly was being assaulted by troublemakers and Paul stepped in with strong doctrinal teaching: the Father, he taught, ushered us from the darkness of paganism and error into light. He “transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son,in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” This is our King, our Redeemer, with power over sin!
Furthermore, regarding Christ: “He is the image of the invisible God,” He it was who created all things in heaven and earth; the visible and invisible, even the spiritual powers, “All things were created for Him and through Him.” He holds all things in being. This is our King of the universe, Christ Our King! Yet, not enough for the outburst of faith from Paul, “He is the head of the body, the church.” “Firstborn of the dead,” He enjoys the “fullness of God.” How all this?
What the prophet Samuel said was true of Jesus. He was the chosen one, the Savior King promised from of old. All that excited Paul as he wrote about Jesus was true. He was and is “Ruler” of heaven and earth. Yes, the sneering “Temple rulers,” the soldiers of mighty Rome could mock, while the criminals crucified with Jesus suggest choices for us to make; repent before the day of our calling, acknowledge our pitiful mistakes, be forgiven by the Redeemer King, thence meet Him at peace and joyful as we enter His Kingdom of Heaven.

Muy a menudo cantamos un himno que nos revela una cualidad maravillosa de nuestra Iglesia Católica: “Un pan, un solo cuerpo, un Señor de Todos.” La primera lectura elegida para la Solemnidad de Cristo Nuestro Rey nos pide que no olvidemos la ‘unidad’ de nuestra Iglesia. Los líderes de las numerosas tribus de Israel se reunieron en Hebrón, lugar de enterramiento de Abraham, Isaac, José y sus esposas. Está muy cerca de Belén, ‘Casa del Pan’, donde nació el unificador, el rey David. Y también Jesús de una sola fe, un solo bautismo, que sigue ofreciéndose a nosotros en el Santo Pan como un solo Cuerpo, Sangre, Alma y una Divinidad, un solo Rey Pastor que nos guía en nuestro camino al cielo.
San Pablo, de la iglesia de Colosas, acudió en ayuda, probablemente, de un convertido de la cercana ciudad más importante de Éfeso. Lo que este amigo de Pablo había enseñado correctamente fue ser agredido por alborotadores y Pablo intervino con una fuerte enseñanza doctrinal: el Padre, él enseñaba, nos sacó de la oscuridad del paganismo y el error hacia la luz. Nos “transfirió al reino de su Amado Hijo, en quien tenemos redención, el perdón de los pecados.” ¡Este es nuestro Rey, nuestro Redentor, que tiene poder sobre el pecado!
Además, respecto a Cristo: “Él es imagen del Dios invisible“, Él fue quien creó todas las cosas en el cielo y la tierra; lo visible e invisible, incluso los poderes espirituales, “Todas las cosas fueron creadas para Él y a través de Él.” Él sostiene todas las cosas en el ser. ¡Este es nuestro Rey del universo, Cristo Nuestro Rey! Sin embargo, no lo suficiente para el estallido de fe de Pablo: “Él es la cabeza del cuerpo, la iglesia.” “Primogénito de los muertos,” disfruta de la “plenitud de Dios.” ¿Cómo es todo esto?
Lo que dijo el profeta Samuel sobre Jesús era cierto. Él era el elegido, el Rey Salvador prometido desde hace tiempo. Todo lo que emocionaba a Pablo mientras escribía sobre Jesús era cierto. Él fue y es el “Gobernante” del cielo y la tierra. Sí, los burlones ‘gobernantes del Templo’, los soldados de la poderosa Roma podían burlarse, mientras los criminales crucificados con Jesús sugieren decisiones para que tomemos; arrepiéntete antes del día de nuestro llamamiento, reconoce nuestros lamentables errores, ser perdonado por el Rey Redentor y luego rencuéntrate con Él en paz y alegría al entrar en Su Reino de los Cielos.
“Hoy estarás conmigo en el Paraíso.”
