On Monday, May 6th at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in San Francisco, the Salesian Boys and Girls Club celebrated its eighty-third annual Fr. Trinchieri Founders Mass and Old Timers’ Dinner. The tradition of honoring the Club’s founder, Fr. Oreste Trinchieri, SDB, or “Fr. Trink,” as he was affectionately known, dates back to 1941 when Angelo Fusco, the Executive Director at the time, started the tradition of gathering alumni for Mass and a stag dinner. The annual “Father Trink” Award was created to honor a former member for outstanding support of the Salesian Boys’ Club. With the addition of girls in 1994, the Miss Bertha Bedoni Women’s Award started under Executive Director, Russell Gumina. “Miss B,” as she was known, grew up in North Beach, took Don Bosco’s “Preventive System” to Presentation High School, where she taught physical education for decades, and continued her involvement at Sts. Peter and Paul Church throughout her life. From the late 1950s through the early 1970s, she ran an informal girls’ club on Friday nights at Sts. Peter and Paul, working there alongside Fr. Larry Byrne, SDB and the boys’ Executive Director, Fred Scolari. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fr. John Itzaina, SDB, celebrated Mass, stepping in for Fr. Tho Bui, SDB. Afterward, two hundred and fifty men went to the Salesian auditorium while one hundred and fifty women left for the San Francisco Italian Athletic Club across the street from the church. Executive Director Randy DeMartini and Old Timers Association President Steve Leveroni presented this year’s Fr. Trinchieri Award to former Boys’ Club member Bill Lazzaretti. Bill joined the Club at an early age in the early 1960s and attended throughout grammar and high school. He has served on the Club board for almost twenty years and recently completed a term as President. Teresa Basile received The Miss Bertha Bedoni award. Teresa attended Sts. Peter and Paul Salesian Grammar School in the 1970s, and when her daughter joined the Club some years back, Teresa got involved as a volunteer and became a mainstay in the Club’s Mothers Club. As a side note, her brother, Vince Manfreda, and sister-in-law, Anita Manfreda, currently teach at Sts. Peter and Paul Salesian Grammar School. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
