Just as details of the\u00a0Ascension are best given in\u00a0Acts<\/em>, so it is for the coming of the Holy Spirit. In fact, though the Spirit is often mentioned in the\u00a0Gospels<\/em>\u00a0y\u00a0Letters,<\/em>\u00a0only in\u00a0Acts<\/em>, thanks to St. Luke, is the descent of the Spirit described. That seems totally appropriate, for he introduced the Spirit at the Incarnation,\u00a0\u201cThe Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God\u201d (Lk 1:33).\u00a0<\/em>If at the birth of Jesus, why not at the birth of His Mystical Body, the Church? (Acts 2:1-11).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that is our first reading of Pentecost. Jesus had told them at His Ascension to await the Promised One.\u00a0This\u00a0has become the pattern of all other nine-day prayers we\u00a0now\u00a0call novenas. The Holy Spirit responded by revealing Himself in a driving wind and tongues of fire, and though\u00a0a crowd had gathered from numerous regions of the Near East and Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Islands of the Mediterranean, they all understood the Apostles\u2019 preaching. We, too, are called to listen and to understand. Christ, on our behalf, called the Holy Spirit from heaven.\u00a0The\u00a0loving\u00a0Holy Spirit calls us from heaven to live\u00a0there\u00a0forever with Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Holy Spirit is a\u00a0quiet but essential part of our Christian life. St. Paul teaches the Corinthians in our second Pentecost reading,\u00a0\u201cNo one can say,\u00a0\u2018Jesus is Lord,\u2019 except by the Holy Spirit.\u201d Again,\u00a0<\/em>to the Philippians and in a burst of feeling, Paul, moved by Christ\u2019s obedient and saving sacrifice, proclaimed,\u00a0\u201cEvery knee should bend, every tongue confess that\u00a0\u2018Jesus Christ is Lord,\u2019 to the glory of God the Father<\/em>\u201d (Phil 2:10b-11). A true Christian should ever seek in the depth of faith and affection to be moved by those words of Paul praising our Savior God by the gift of the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, John\u2019s Gospel invites us to join the disciples as they welcomed the Risen Lord. He had come among us to save us from sin. Now, Jesus was to share with His Church\u00a0the reason\u00a0why He came. We\u00a0are called\u00a0to witness the source of compassion and love which moved Him.\u00a0On that\u00a0evening, He breathed His Spirit of love and forgiveness upon them,\u201c<\/em>Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins\u00a0you forgive are forgiven them<\/em>\u00a0\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Graciously forgiven,<\/em> gratefully do I give thanks!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
