The Church was in a period of growth and needed help to spread the Gospel. Paul VI, probably at that time, said to the missionaries and the Christian community, “I am bound to proclaim that Jesus is Christ, the Son of the living God. Because of Him we come to know the God we cannot see.” Paul VI was taking to himself the inspired thinking and even some of the words of his namesake, St. Paul.

The Pope then added, “Above all, He [Jesus Christ] is the Son of Man, more perfect than any man, being also the Son of God, eternal and infinite.” This Son of God and of Man is the Jesus of our faith, and our first two readings bring these names to the front. Ezekiel is called by God, “Son of man.” God wants him to be humble and not to speak as if on his own. He was to speak the wondrous words of God by saying, “Thus says the Lord.”

And St. Paul had discerned that he too needed the humbling touch of God. He wrote, “That I, Paul, might not become too elated because of the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, an angel of Satan, to beat me, to keep me from being too elated.” No need to waste time speculating what those devilish temptations were. They taught Paul that he was still weak. His consolation—and it would be ours too—would be to accept God’s lesson, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.”

St. Mark’s Gospel too bears out the message of humble faith in Christ. None of the gospels conceal that Jesus, eternal Son of the living God, frequently refers to himself as Son of Man. He shared our humanity in humble obedience to the Father, and clearly, Jesus wanted that known. God, with the tool of human weakness accepted by His divine Son, redeemed sinful human nature. Truly, God’s perfect power to forgive has been made known forever through the Lord God dwelling in Jesus Christ. We must be forever grateful. We must not let Jesus be amazed at our lack of faith in Him.

Your merciful love, O God, be Praised! (See Entrance Antiphon)

During his tenure, Pope Paul VI traveled to Africa where he urged missionaries working there to take native Africans into their Societies.
