(Corpus Christi Church, San Francisco, California)<\/strong> – We meet Jesus on this 23rd Sunday\u00a0in the midst of\u00a0an excursion into pagan territory to the north of Israel, the twin districts of Tyre and Sion. There\u00a0He\u00a0had cast a demon from the daughter of a widow, but only after reminding her bluntly that he had come for the Jews. Now, from this region close to Israel, He chose to remain in pagan territory, going to the far side of the Lake. That is where today\u2019s gospel sign will occur, and we encounter quiet assurance that the message of Christ is universal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, we meet Isaiah, prophet of the Babylonian Captivity. His prophecy, repeated twice, is widely accepted as referring to the Messiah. What would the signs of the Christ, the Messiah, be? Jesus quoted them when the Baptist sent messengers to Him asking if He was the Christ. Jesus responded, \u201cGo back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor\u201d (Lk 7:22). \u2018Yes,\u2019 said Jesus, \u2018I am the Messiah.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, the Apostle James warns Christians not to be exclusive but to welcome one another without distinction, whether rich or poor. The message of Christ is meant for all: \u201cMy brothers and sisters, show no partiality as you adhere to the faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ,\u201d and \u201cDid not God choose those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who love him?\u201d Christians, love one another as God has loved you. That is the message of Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In our Gospel, St. Mark gives us an example of Jesus among the unbelievers. The poor pagan girl among the Siro-Phoenicians had been freed from the devil. Now, it does not matter that another pagan is in need. It matters not that he is a member of a nation hostile to the Jewish faith. \u201cEphrathah!\u201d Receive the power of the loving God. Be able to hear and to speak, creature of God. And we, touched by the loving hand of God at Baptism, let our actions ever proclaim our faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Praise be the Lord Jesus!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
