Ed Liptak, SDB

God was about to lay the foundation of true faith in Him, and God chose Abraham, a descendant of Shem, Noah’s son, to lead a chosen people into a new relationship with Him. In the opening reading of the first Sunday of Lent, Moses traced God’s continuing gift to His people throughout their varied history. Their offering of the first fruits of the land was to be the act of thanksgiving for God’s gift to them of a homeland. Indeed, God is still with His new chosen people, and we do thank Him. However, our sign of Lent is not only the ashes on our foreheads, but also our sacrifices offered in thanks for our redemption given us by the sacrifice of His Son. Do we show in Lent that we are truly grateful?

As the Jewish people had their ancient Scriptures to guide them, so do we. In his letter to the Romans, St. Paul makes the word of Moses belong to us, too, saying, “The word [faith] is near you, in your mouth and in your heart.” But, of course, Paul refers to faith in God revealed through Jesus: “No one who believes in Him will be put to shame.” The Scriptures are a treasure for us, whether Old Testament or New, for the ‘Way’ to salvation is taught by both. A good way to open oneself to God’s saving grace is to sacrifice a set time each day of Lent to read and pray over, for example, the Passion chapters of the four Gospels.

Jesus sets the pattern for us to become more fully Christian by growing into Him. Yet, St. Luke’s Gospel hints at a sad truth. Every inspired instinct we have to become more a son or daughter of God – more Christlike, more Godlike – will be countered by one who hates God, Satan. If Jesus suffered temptation from the devil when starting His mission following His Baptism, so can we be tempted. What distracts us from our good intention to draw closer to God through a lifestyle that is more pleasing to Him is that of the devil.

It may be love for food, money, power, pleasure, or testing God, or neglect to pay our debt of thanks to the creator God. Any of these are forms of self or devil-serving. Consider One hanged by his arms, hands, and feet, pierced by rough nails, made to die slowly, gasping from suffocation, dies a terrible death. That was the final cost of our salvation.

Lord God, Stay Near. Deliver Us from Evil

Dios Cerca De Nosotros

By Fr.
