Over 300 young people from different schools, backgrounds, and life experiences gathered together for the first Camp Savio meeting of the year. Even though Camp Savio won’t officially begin until July, these young leaders have already committed to months of preparation, training, and—most importantly—service.

At first glance, you could see the beautiful mix of personalities in the room. Some were quiet and reflective, absorbing everything being said. Others were eager to connect, introducing themselves to new faces and immediately making friends. But what united them all was something deeper: a shared willingness to serve their community and grow in their faith.

A Call to Serve, A Call to Belong

During the meeting, JC Montenegro reminded everyone of an essential truth in the Salesian tradition: “Our mother, the Virgin Mary, has brought us to Savio. Now, the question is how are we going to answer that invitational call?”

This wasn’t just another meeting, it was the beginning of a mission. The young people spent time learning about Don Bosco, the heart behind Camp Savio, and the importance of creating a welcoming environment for the children they will serve in the summer. Through engaging talks and interactive activities, they discovered that volunteering is more than just giving time, it’s about transforming lives, including their own.

One of the most powerful aspects of these gatherings is the sense of belonging they create. For many young people, Camp Savio is not just a summer program—it’s a home. It’s a place where they are seen, heard, and valued. It’s where they can step away from the struggles they face and step into a community that embraces them just as they are.

Leaders Building Leaders

Camp Savio isn’t just about individual growth, it’s about leadership. And that leadership starts from within the community itself.

The Head Counselors, who have been meeting since January, have taken ownership of making this year’s program a success. From designing the logo and picking t-shirt colors to planning meetings and running social media campaigns, they are proving that young people can take charge and inspire others. Their message is clear: we are all leaders, and we all have the power to make a difference.

Their dedication has paid off. In the week leading up to the meeting, social media was flooded with reels and posts inviting people to be part of Camp Savio. The Head Counselors made sure to tag, share, and engage and their efforts helped bring over 300 teenagers to the first gathering.

Moments That Matter

Beyond the planning, beyond the logistics, the real impact of this work is seen in moments of genuine connection.

One young counselor reflected on a conversation they had during the meeting:

“I saw two girls, standing alone in a corner. I went up to greet them and found out it was their first year. They were nervous, but I reassured them that they would meet new people. At the end of the night, I found them again, and they told me how much fun they had and how welcomed they felt. This moment connected to my mission statement—I want to make people feel safe, vulnerable [open to growth], and seen. I think I did that today.”

This is the kind of transformation that happens when young people step up not just to serve, but to see and care for those around them.

Looking Ahead: A Prayer for our summer camps in the world

As we move forward, we ask for prayers for our summer camps all over the world.

Camp Savio is not just a program, it’s a movement. It’s a place where young people discover their purpose, their community, and their faith. It’s where service turns into love, and love turns into transformation.

To the young people who have already stepped forward to say “yes” you are making a difference. You are answering the call. You are building something beautiful.

By JC Montengro, PhD – (Bellflower, California) – On March 14, 2025, something extraordinary happened.
