Ed Liptak, SDB –

God has given us three fine gifts that, if we use them, can lead us gently toward Him. The first is Memory. It is a sort of warmup gift we need to get us off any laziness about ourselves and get us climbing toward God. Any one of us can use this method. It demands only that we take some time imagining the good things God has done for us from past to present. I’m afraid we may tend to blame God for bad things. Instead, let us take a step upward and rediscover that God is a God of Goodness.

In the first reading today, Joshua had undertaken the awesome task of substituting for Moses. Surely, he remembered the wonders worked by his leader. Moses had led Israel through the Red Sea into freedom. Now, Joshua was to lead Israel through the Jordan River and into the Promised Land. It was not Moses who brought Israel to freedom, but God. Joshua began the defeat of the ‘nations’ inhabiting the Holy Land, but it was God who gave the victory. Israel would ever remember the mighty God.

St. Paul, mindful of the old, signals a new era under Christ. By power of his ‘Intellect’ he sees that “The old things have passed away; behold, new things have come. And all this is from God.” All this, says Paul, because God has sent Christ at great cost to compensate for our sins. God calls us up this second step, using another of his wonderful gifts, ‘Intellect.’ Faith is the eye of our soul that helps us see this step toward God. It places our belief in Jesus at the center of our salvation.

Believing, we are called to stand firm, strong of Will. By this gift, we master threats against our call to the Kingdom of God, to Eternal Life with God. The Scriptures help our Memory to recall God’s presence in our midst. Intellect helps us to understand and believe. Will helps us to defeat temptation and persevere on the way to God.

Did these gifts help the selfish younger son of today’s Gospel not remain lost in a world of desire and sin? Memory helped him recall his good life with his father. Intellect and a firm Will led him to conclude that he would be pardoned and taken back. No matter our state of life, God responds by welcoming us, too, home to Him. Get started. Keep at it. Climb step by step. God loves us!

“Taste and See the goodness of the Lord.”

Pasos Hacia Dios

Sube peldaño a peldaño. ¡Dios nos ama!

“Gustad y ved la bondad del Señor”.

By Fr.
