Ed Liptak, SDB

This fifth Sunday of Lent, Isaiah recalls God’s powerful presence among His ancient Chosen; St. Paul urges unshaken belief in God with us through the presence of Jesus; and John’s Gospel displays God’s Wisdom and Might in Jesus, the forgiver of sin.

Isaiah, writing during the darkness of Babylonian and Persian captivity, reminds his fellow captives how God ended the Egyptian captivity. He led them through the waters of the deep. God, said Isaiah, would lead Israel through the desert to their ancient home. Today, not Isaiah but our Church begs us in dark times to trust in God’s might as we seek, despite surrounding evil, to stay free of sin. St. Paul tells Christians of all ages to cherish their faith in Christ and not be shaken from their belief.

Thus, our Church also uses Paul’s plea to urge us to avoid overconfidence, even if we are repentant of sin, trusting little in ourselves but much in Christ’s saving power. Jesus is our way to an eternal reward. Easy ways of sinfulness belong on the garbage heap. With Paul and our companion believers, we ought to say, “I continue my pursuit toward the goal, the prize of God’s upward calling, in Christ Jesus.”

John’s Gospel reveals Jesus on an early trip to Jerusalem for the Feast of Tabernacles. The City was crowded with pilgrims. Jesus was becoming very popular, and the Temple leaders got so angry that Jesus cried out openly, “You want to kill me.” Seeking to arrest Him, the Elders brought Him a woman taken in adultery. By the Law of Moses, she deserved to be stoned to death. They challenged Jesus: “Moses said, what do you say?”

Hence, a splendid example of holy Wisdom rooted in Jesus. They had set the woman in front of Him amidst the crowd. In return, Jesus set them before the eyes of God. Jeremiah (17:13) records the finger of God tracing in the earth the names of those who forsake Him. Jesus imitated this action, and silence reigned. Jesus gave the accusers a simple task: “Let the one who has no sin be the first to throw a stone.”No one dared test the knowledge and power of Jesus.

Jesus knows you and me thoroughly.

Desafiaron a Jesús: “Moisés dijo: ¿Qué dices tú?”

By Fr.
