Ed Liptak, SDB

We join the triumph of Jesus, King in the royal line of David, as He enters the Holy City of Jerusalem, God’s dwelling place in the Holy of Holies. “Destroy this Temple, and in three days I will raise it up again,” Jesus had said. He was the Living Temple of the LORD, about to battle victoriously over sin and death. Yet, how strange a battle it would seem, for God’s ways are not our ways.

Luke’s history of the triumphal entry to Jerusalem is detailed. Jesus, wonderworker and preacher of the Kingdom, had been busy in and outside the city. The lame walked, the blind saw, and the poor had the Gospel preached to them. At the entry, St. Luke made it clear that Jesus had divine knowledge. This triumph was to be God’s, and Jesus was His all-knowing Son. What the disciples would find approaching the city was foreseen by Jesus: the colt – ‘on which no one had ever ridden’ – to go gently under Jesus, the objection by its owner and Christ’s response to him, ‘The Master has use for it.’ As Jesus entered the city, how true was the chant, “Blessed the King who comes in the Name of the Lord.” How believable were Christ’s words, “I tell you, if they keep silent, the stones will cry out!” God was in their midst.

At the Passion Mass, Isaiah’s prophecy of the suffering Savior quickly changes the joyful, triumphant tone. “I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who plucked my beard; my face I did not shield from buffets and spitting.” St. Paul, too in his hymn, praises the obedience of God’s Son, who humbly takes human form to defeat evil and to save us, thus obeys, “… unto death, even death on a cross.” However, suffering and triumph are mingled, for so great was His obedience that all heaven above and earth below must proclaim that “Jesus Christ is LORD to the Glory of the Father.”

Just one thought as in the Passion, Matthew narrates the sorrowful last hours of Jesus’ life. Matthew wrote a long Gospel. The betrayal of Judas is given much space—likewise, the denial of Peter. Much is written about the words and deeds of others. But half a line mentions the scourging. The crucifixion and death scenes of Jesus are unexpectedly brief. Could it be that Matthew wrote with a troubled conscience? If ever by serious sin our loyalty to Christ has failed, were we, too? Are we troubled? We cannot hurt Jesus now, but for the hurt he suffered during the awesome pain, mental and physical, He endured to redeem us. Do not these words of St. Paul move us?
“For our sake, He made Him to be sin who did not know sin, so that we might become the righteousness of God in him.”

Triunfo y Sufrimiento

By Fr.
