While many sites do offer archives with search functionality, they often fail to locate all keyword occurrences, due to technical restrictions or limitations put in place to prevent server overload.

To overcome these challenges, instead of building a simple document archive with basic search features, the project team developed a fully-fledged search engine, complete with a text-reading feature. It’s a robust solution, powered by dedicated hardware and custom-designed software.

During the planning phase, two options were considered: a locally installed software or a web-based application. Given that BSOL’s mission is to spread the Salesian charism to as many people as possible, the team chose the web option, allowing anyone to freely search and access Salesian documents.

The search engine is accessible at: www.donbosco.info

The web interface is intentionally minimal and straightforward, designed to optimize loading speed. The homepage lists available files and folders, making browsing easier. Documents are available not only in Italian but also in other languages, which can be selected via the icon in the upper left corner.

Most uploaded files are in PDF format, created through OCR (Optical Character Recognition)scanning. Since OCR is not always 100% accurate, some keywords may not be detected. To address this, several smart strategies have been implemented: the search engine ignores punctuation, accented or special characters, and can even handle missing or incorrect characters. More technical details can be found in the FAQ section at the bottom of the page.

Given the vast number of documents available, searches may return a large number of results. To narrow things down, you can filter by folder, title, author, or year—and these filters can be used together for more targeted results. The system ranks search results by relevance, primarily based on keyword density y proximity in the text.

Ideally, documents in vector format would be preferred over scanned ones, as this would ensure more accurate search results and significantly faster file loading times.

This ambitious and highly significant project is a valuable resource for the entire Salesian world. For this reason, Fr. Andrei Munteanu, Director of BSOL and the driving force behind this initiative, is calling on everyone to contribute:

“If you have documents in vector format or better quality versions of those already available in the search engine, you can upload them via the upload service at www.donbosco.space.

You can also add new documents not yet in the system.
