Ed Liptak, SDB –

The Acts of the Apostles records that nothing could stop them from talking about Jesus, not even being called up before the full assembly of the Temple court. Peter and the others boldly resisted a repeated order not to preach in Jesus’ name. They retorted, “We must obey God rather than men.” Further, they openly accused the Sanhedrin of murderous intent toward Christ and insisted that God had raised Him up and exalted Him.“ We are witnesses of these things, as is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.”

Among key witnesses to the Resurrection was John, the beloved Apostle of Jesus. In Revelation, John heard the angels sing, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches, wisdom and strength, honor and glory and blessing … [to Him] be blessing and honor, glory and might, forever and ever.” John, out of love, testified to his witness of the Lord’s glory in heaven and on earth.

Yes, Acts did stress that Peter and the Apostles needed to obey God rather than man. However, it is not an exaggeration to believe that their love for the Master, their loving attachment to Him, was the source of their loyalty, not duty alone. Similarly, our Christian lives ought not be out of compulsion, but out of love for Jesus and in gratitude for all he has done to redeem us.

Along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, there is a small chapel dear to several of our recent Popes. It commemorates John’s account given in the second part of our Gospel today. It is hard to imagine that Peter’s swim to shore was because of obedience. Rather, moved by friendship and love, he plunged into the sea and hurried to meet “the Lord!” It is usually foolish and daring to be so certain of a person’s motive as to assert, for Peter as we have done, his love and friendship.

But Jesus himself has spoken for its accuracy: “Not, ‘Peter, will you obey Me?’, but ‘Do you love me?’ Not, ‘Will you stay loyal to Me?’, but ‘Do you love Me?’ Not, ‘Will you defend Me?’, but ‘Do you love Me?'” John Paul II, in raising the Divine Mercy to a Solemnity, saw loving forgiveness as a mark of the Church. Pope Francis was a Pope who loved people, every member of the Church, and others too. So ought we.

No, ‘permaneceréis leales a Mí,’ sino ‘¿Me amáis?’ No, ‘Me defenderéis,’ sino ‘¿Me amáis?'”
