Ed Liptak, SDB<\/em> &#8211; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hebrews celebrate Pentecost, the fiftieth day after Passover. We celebrate it fifty days after Easter. Every seven years, Jewish Pentecost and Christian Pentecost are celebrated on the same day. We know most about the Ascension from St. Luke, and so we get the fullest report on Pentecost from the end of Luke\u2019s Gospel and from his <em>Acts of the Apostles.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our first reading is from <em>Acts<\/em>. The Twelve, Mary, and members of Jesus\u2019 family (See <em>Acts 1<\/em>) were together praying and awaiting the Spirit. Suddenly, they heard the sound of a strong wind (<em>Breath of the Spirit<\/em>), saw Flames of Fire over each, and they began to speak in as many languages as there were people gathered in Jerusalem for the ancient Pentecost. The Apostles spilled out of their room and began speaking to those attracted by the sound of the Wind. Fear had kept them hiding together, but now they were filled with courage and were speaking of \u201c<em>the mighty acts of God.<\/em>\u201d Oh, Holy Spirit! Give us, too, boldness to profess our Catholic Faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luke\u2019s great faith in the Holy Spirit may have come from his friend Paul, who wrote to the Corinthians, \u201c<em>No one can say \u2018Jesus is Lord,\u2019 except by the Holy Spirit.<\/em>\u201d Paul spent a long time with them speaking in their tongue (Greek). He now urged them to understand that the variety of their Christian gifts came from that Spirit. More so, that a new form of life dwelled in them, \u201c<em>For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.<\/em>\u201d So precious is God\u2019s baptismal gift to us all of the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">St. Paul and St. Luke were not alone in their deep faith in the Spirit. St. John, in his Gospel, returns us to Resurrection Day. He invoked the Name of the Holy Spirit and linked the Spirit to the divine gift of forgiveness. Jesus appeared to the Eleven, breathed upon them, and said, &#8220;<em>Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.<\/em>&#8221; Thus, Jesus shared His saving power with His Church. His entire being He gave to destroy the power of sin and death on our behalf, His members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>&#8220;God has sent the Spirit of his Son<br>Into our hearts&#8221; (Galatians 4:6).<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-coblocks-dynamic-separator has-background has-dark-gray-color is-style-fullwidth\" style=\"height:40px\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Esp\u00edritu y Vida<\/strong><\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Por P. Ed Liptak, SDB<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Los hebreos celebran Pentecost\u00e9s el quincuag\u00e9simo d\u00eda despu\u00e9s de la Pascua. Nosotros lo celebramos cincuenta d\u00edas despu\u00e9s de la Pascua. Cada siete a\u00f1os, el Pentecost\u00e9s jud\u00edo y el Pentecost\u00e9s cristiano se celebran el mismo d\u00eda. Danos, tambi\u00e9n, la valent\u00eda de profesar nuestra fe cat\u00f3lica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La gran fe de Lucas en el Esp\u00edritu Santo pudo provenir de su amigo Pablo, quien escribi\u00f3 a los corintios: \u00ab<em>Nadie puede decir: \u2018Jes\u00fas es el Se\u00f1or\u2019, sino por el Esp\u00edritu Santo<\/em>\u00bb. Pablo pas\u00f3 mucho tiempo con ellos hablando en su lengua (griego). Ahora los inst\u00f3 a comprender que la variedad de sus dones cristianos proven\u00eda de ese Esp\u00edritu. M\u00e1s a\u00fan, que una nueva forma de vida habitaba en ellos: \u00ab<em>Porque en un solo Esp\u00edritu fuimos todos bautizados en un solo cuerpo, ya sean jud\u00edos o griegos, esclavos o libres, y a todos se nos dio a beber de un mismo Esp\u00edritu<\/em>\u00bb. Tan precioso es el don bautismal de Dios para todos nosotros: el Esp\u00edritu Santo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">San Pablo y San Lucas no estaban solos en su profunda fe en el Esp\u00edritu. San Juan, en su Evangelio, nos devuelve al D\u00eda de la Resurrecci\u00f3n. Invoc\u00f3 el nombre del Esp\u00edritu Santo y lo relacion\u00f3 con el don divino del perd\u00f3n. Jes\u00fas se apareci\u00f3 a los Once, sopl\u00f3 sobre ellos y les dijo: \u00ab<em>Reciban el Esp\u00edritu Santo. A quienes perdonen los pecados, les ser\u00e1n perdonados, y a quienes se los retengan, les ser\u00e1n retenidos<\/em>\u00bb. As\u00ed, Jes\u00fas comparti\u00f3 su poder salvador con su Iglesia.
