(Bellflower, California)<\/strong> – How far do young people really have to go to grow? Sometimes, just 15 miles is enough to feel like you\u2019ve entered a completely different world. For many youth, stepping out of their familiar environments can be intimidating. New faces, new energy, new ways of doing things\u2014it\u2019s not always easy. However, the truth is that it\u2019s in those exact moments of discomfort and change that real growth begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This past Friday, July 4th, while many enjoyed the holiday at home, a group of youth from the St. Mary\u2019s Youth Group chose to spend their holiday giving back. Some of them served as counselors at Camp Salesian, others are currently serving this summer, and all of them have been part of the Salesian Youth Leadership Conference. They gave up their day off\u2014from 7 AM to 4 PM\u2014to volunteer at Camp Savio, the summer camp of Saint Dominic Savio Church in Bellflower led by JC Montenegro, PhD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It wasn\u2019t just about helping\u2014it was a day full of learning:
\u2728 Stepping out of their comfort zones
\u2728 Realizing how a positive attitude shapes a positive experience
\u2728 Discovering that the Salesian Family is much bigger than one parish or youth center
\u2728 Feeling the joy and energy of another vibrant youth ministry
\u2728 And most importantly\u2014making new friends<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choosing courage over comfort and community over isolation gave our leaders an experience that broadened their perspective on the world and themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
