It was a key event for the mobilization of policies and resources for development at the global governmental level.

With this in mind, and with the aim of maintaining their commitment over time, the main Church organizations in Spain joined together to demand the cancellation of foreign debt and “ecological debt” to poor countries.

“Debt for hope, was one of the clearest appeals that emerged during the recent conference and the previous Civil Society Forum. It was an appeal from all the Church and civil society organisations gathered during these days to give voice to the cry of so many people whose rights have been violated, preventing them from living a dignified life,” said Joaquín Rodríguez, director of the Bosco Global NGO, about the significance of the meeting, which included parallel events as spaces for attentive listening and constructive dialogue with organizations suffering injustice in poor countries.

The Salesians, through Bosco Global, participated together with the Spanish Episcopal Conference (the Episcopal Commission for Social Pastoral and Human Promotion, the Sub-Commission for Charitable and Social Action and the Department for Integral Ecology); the Archdiocese of Seville; the Enlázate por la Justicia platform, based in Seville, of which the Salesian NGO itself is a member; Caritas; CONFER; Justice and Peace; Manos Unidas; and the Spanish Hub for the Economy of Francis, or REDES, which also includes the Madrid Mission Office, Misiones Salesianas.

“Misiones Salesianas, together with other organizations representing the Catholic Church, is committed to giving civil society an important role in a context where governments and the private sector meet. It is essential to establish, through the Seville Commitment, the guidelines for a new field of work in the financing of development cooperation, in which the countries of the South have their own voice and an important role in the management of debt, without this being a limitation or an impediment to guaranteeing a secure future for the children and young people we work with. It is an opportunity to make our voice heard and to represent all the people who work with us,” said Bruno Fernández, Head of Misiones Salesianas for obtaining resources for solidarity.

“In this global dialogue, we advocate a more just and transformative funding model, based on the defence of rights. Reality provides data that must change. More than half of the least developed countries devote more resources to paying interest on debt than to investing in health and education. The processes of financing and international cooperation must be reformulated,” Misiones Salesianas said, recalling that five years after achieving the Sustainable Development Goals there is still much to be done.

This meeting was an opportunity to demand a fair model of cooperation, in which the countries of the Global South have a say and debt does not compromise their future.

This conference is seen as a historic opportunity to build new bridges of trust and hope in the context of the 2025 Jubilee.

Reasons for hope

With the final document of the Seville Commitment Summit, the Salesians trust in a shared path that will establish at least some mechanisms and criteria to improve the current situation. “Especially with regard to debt, which is the greatest burden and generates greater inequality and injustice. The role of cooperation is also strengthened in terms of increasing resources and reviewing fairer taxation,” Bosco Global said.

Unity of the Church

The significance of the Jubilee Year is valued positively, as it has strengthened the collaborative work and unified message of these spaces for entities such as Bosco Global or Misiones Salesianas, and organizations in which they are integrated, such as REDES or the Enlázate por la Justicia platform, as it allows them to align to push for measures for global economic justice.

“The 2025 Jubilee Year calls for a critical review of the logic that governs international debt, lest it continue to be a burden that suffocates the poorest populations. This celebration invites us to imagine and promote economic systems that put life, justice and respect for human rights before financial interests,” said the participants, wishing to include other messages in the Global Agenda, as well as to strengthen the civil society network and encourage greater participation of young people.

All these elements emerged after the Fourth UN Conference with a hopeful look to the near future.

(ANS – Seville) – The Fourth United Nations International Conference on Financing for Development was held in Seville from June 30 to July 3.
