Last Sunday, we were confronted with examples of \u2018generosity\u2019, and our Church advised us, \u2018go and do likewise.\u2019 The good Lord Jesus was to be for us the greatest example of self-giving. This 17th Sunday, we are challenged to make \u2018persistence in prayer\u2019 a key part of our Christian and pastoral life. Abraham of the Old Testament is once more offered to us as an example of how to pray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Sunday\u2019s example makes us smile as Abraham, with a compassionate heart, tried to whittle away at God\u2019s intention to destroy the sinful city of Sodom, where his nephew Lot lived. Standing with God above the city, Abraham pleaded for clemency if only fifty innocent people could be found in the city, then all the way down to ten. God was willing, but the wickedness of Sodom was so great that they had sexual desire for the two angels sent by God to discover the true depth of evil that endangered Lot, his wife, and their two daughters. These indeed were spared\u2014five innocent souls, not ten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

St. Paul to the Colossians reminds us today of what took place in us through Baptism. We were buried with Christ; raised with Him; if dead in sin, brought back to life by Him; forgiven by Him; the bond of the old Law held against us obliterated, gone from among us, nailed by Him to the Cross. Through Baptism Christ has done all this, and we ought in response to pray in thanksgiving as Paul reveals for us the true and wondrous work of Christ Our Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frequently in St. Luke\u2019s Gospel, Jesus goes off by Himself to pray. This Sunday\u2019s Gospel recounts one of Jesus’ prayer vigils. On that occasion, His followers were moved by the example of Jesus\u2019 prayer, and as He returned, they asked for help with their own prayer. Jesus responded by teaching them the \u2018Our Father.\u2019 Then, He added a quality that all our prayers should have, and that is \u2018persistence,\u2019 or patience. At Mass, it would also be well to remember that the Our Father is ours because an Apostle said, \u201cLord, teach us how to pray.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us recall one more thing, that our prayer does require faith. Jesus said, \u201cAsk and you will receive.\u201d \u201cSeek and you will find.\u201d \u201cKnock and the door will be opened.\u201d He is ready to do His part. For us, the stronger our faith, the better our prayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Persistencia en la Oraci\u00f3n<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

El domingo pasado nos enfrentamos a ejemplos de “generosidad”, <\/em>y nuestra Iglesia nos aconsej\u00f3: “Vayan y hagan lo mismo.”<\/em> El buen Se\u00f1or Jes\u00fas iba a ser para nosotros el mayor ejemplo de entrega. Este domingo 17 tenemos el desaf\u00edo de hacer\u00a0 de\u00a0 la “persistencia en la oraci\u00f3n” <\/em>una parte clave de nuestra vida cristiana y pastoral. Abraham del Antiguo Testamento se nos ofrece una vez m\u00e1s como un ejemplo de c\u00f3mo orar.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El ejemplo de este domingo nos hace sonre\u00edr cuando Abraham con coraz\u00f3n compasivo trat\u00f3 de reducir la intenci\u00f3n de Dios de destruir la ciudad pecaminosa de Sodoma donde viv\u00eda su sobrino Lot. De pie con Dios sobre la ciudad, Abrahan suplic\u00f3 clemencia si solo se pod\u00edan encontrar cincuenta personas inocentes en la ciudad, de all\u00ed hasta diez. Dios estaba dispuesto, pero la maldad de Sodoma era tan grande que ten\u00edan deseo sexual de que los dos \u00e1ngeles enviados por Dios descubrieran la verdadera profundidad del mal que pon\u00eda en peligro a Lot, su esposa y sus dos hijas. \u00c9stas se salvaron: cinco almas inocentes, no diez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

San Pablo a los Colosenses nos recuerda hoy lo que sucedi\u00f3 en nosotros a trav\u00e9s del Bautismo. Fuimos sepultados con Cristo; resucitados con \u00c9l; si est\u00e1 muerto en pecado, resucitado por \u00c9l; perdonado por \u00c9l; el v\u00ednculo de la antigua Ley que se ten\u00eda contra nosotros se borr\u00f3, se fue de entre nosotros, fue clavado por \u00c9l en la Cruz. A trav\u00e9s del Bautismo, Cristo ha hecho todo esto, y debemos orar en acci\u00f3n de gracias cuando Pablo nos revela la verdadera y maravillosa obra de Cristo Nuestro Se\u00f1or.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Con frecuencia, en el Evangelio de San Lucas, Jes\u00fas se va solo a orar. El Evangelio de este domingo se trata de una de esas vigilias de oraci\u00f3n de Jes\u00fas. En esa ocasi\u00f3n, sus seguidores se sintieron conmovidos por el ejemplo de la oraci\u00f3n de Jes\u00fas y, al regresar, pidieron ayuda con su propia oraci\u00f3n. Jes\u00fas respondi\u00f3 ense\u00f1\u00e1ndoles el ‘Padre Nuestro’. Luego agreg\u00f3 una cualidad que toda nuestra oraci\u00f3n deber\u00eda tener, y es la ‘persistencia’ <\/em>o paciencia.<\/em> En la Misa tambi\u00e9n ser\u00eda bueno recordar que el Padre Nuestro es nuestro porque un Ap\u00f3stol dijo: “Se\u00f1or, ens\u00e9\u00f1anos a orar<\/em>“.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recordemos una cosa m\u00e1s, que nuestra oraci\u00f3n requiere fe. Jes\u00fas dijo: “Pide y recibir\u00e1s.” “Busca y encontrar\u00e1s.” “Llama y se abrir\u00e1 la puerta.” \u00c9l est\u00e1 listo para hacer Su parte. Para nosotros, cuanto m\u00e1s fuerte sea nuestra fe, mejor ser\u00e1 nuestra oraci\u00f3n.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
