Ed Liptak, SDB

Sacred Scripture has the Lord Jesus utter some terrible words, that whoever in anger calls his brother ‘Raqqa or Fool,’ is himself worthy of separation from God and hellfire (See Mt 5:22 ). Such judgement belongs to God not anyone else, and Christ’s terrible meaning is that one who judges another, says harshly and means it, “Go to Hell!,“ separates oneself from God and deserves hellfire. Instead, wise People of God await ”salvation of the just and the destruction of their foes,” but we leave that to God. To curse another by calling him a ‘fool’ in this way, desiring that he be cut off from God, is worthy oneself of the horror of hell.

Instead, let there be peace among us as the Psalmist says today, “Blessed are the people the Lord has chosen to be his own.” “May your kindness, O LORD, be upon us who have put our hope in you.” You, Lord, and You alone, are our Judge.

Both the reading from Hebrews and that from the Gospel of Luke speak of humans in relationship with God. For ages, we have yearned for Him and sought His influence in our lives. We have always needed His gifts of Faith, Trust, and Hope to grow in us as earthly days flow on. God sought and received Trust and Faith (from Abraham, and likewise, from his son Isaac, then, from Jacob/ Israel and from his twelve sons, then from Joseph, Mary, and God’s own divine and human Son, Jesus, too) over a period spanning nearly 5000 years.

Yes, it was only 50 centuries ago that God chose Abraham, and modern religious history began. All creation, they say, is over 300,000 centuries old. Yet, God is not finished. Humanity still awaits the second coming of His Son and a new heaven and earth. Is your heart ready to sing, Praise the Lord?

The Gospel itself encourages us without fear to look beyond this world to the kingdom of heaven, the treasure beyond. Stay ready. Fulfill your duty. Be faithful and wise, for even if God should delay, He will come, and hopefully with arms open in welcome. Yes, some will fail, so do be careful. As the days flow on, from those much blessed, much will be required. Yet, Come, Lord God.

“At an hour you do not expect, [I] will come.”
Praise Him, Praise Him, Praise the Everlasting King.

By Fr.
