Ed Liptak, SDB

Two weeks ago, the Old Testament reading on Tuesday, 18th Week, Ordinary Time C, Numbers (12:1-13) told how a family spat arose between Moses, his sister Miriam, and brother Aaron. Moses had dared to marry someone not of his tribe or race. God settled the argument in favor of Moses. Now, on his Sunday, the Jewish Prophet Jeremiah was cast into the mud of an almost dry cistern to die and was saved by someone the same race as Moses’ wife, possibly an Ethiopian Cushite. What might this mean for us? At least, shouldn’t a person’s race mean less to us?
Then the Psalm is exceptional this Sunday, suggesting we think of Jeremiah, a symbol of suffering Christ, and take as his prayer, “Lord, come to my aid,” with Jeremiah drawn from the cistern, and Christ drawn from the grave, and perhaps we ourselves drawn from our own grave-like trouble. Couldn’t we try not to let pass the cry of faithful Jeremiah, of suffering Christ, or our own painful cross-like troubles as the Father’s will? Or perhaps speak to God as Paul did, “[That I ] may not grow weary and lose heart In [my] struggle against sin, [for I] have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood?“ Paul the brave eventually did shed his blood imitating and honoring Jesus.
Also, let us allow St. Luke’s Gospel to help us. Jesus be our guide. After all, don’t we aim to be His disciples, to imitate, to follow Him? In the Gospel, Jesus showed how intense this desire was, “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!” Yet, Jesus said softly, “There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished!” A simple word is “baptism.” Jesus disguised His meaning, but this was an invitation to His disciples (and us) to be one with Him in suffering.

Jesus went on to use ‘figures’ to indicate how awful division might arise from opposition to a marriage: ’father against son; son against father; mother against daughter, and so on down through both families. Can such anger and hatred stop? Paul says yes, “Keeping the eyes on Jesus, leader and perfecter of faith.” Jesus wove this case into appeals for Trust and Patience in God, a purely spiritual answer. He persists, ‘Prayer! Patience, Trust in Me.’ Some things go beyond human solutions, says Jesus, not beyond mine.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight” ( Proverbs 3:5-6 )
