Our goal was to step back from our busy ministries, reflect together, and rediscover the core of our Salesian calling to be present to the young.

Our sessions were filled with rich dialogue and deep reflection. We explored three key areas that are vital for any modern youth ministry:

Youth and the Experience of God: We moved beyond assumptions and asked, “How do young people today experience the sacred? Where do they encounter God?” We discussed the importance of authenticity, listening, and creating spaces where they can explore their deepest questions without fear of judgment.

The Parish as a Home: We reaffirmed the Salesian vision of the parish community as a “home that welcomes.” This means being a family that actively accompanies its young people, offering them mentors, support systems, and a true sense of belonging. We shared practical strategies for making our parishes places where young people feel seen, valued, and empowered.

Nurturing Faith in New Ways: Recognizing that old methods may not always speak to new generations, we brainstormed creative and relevant ways to nurture and live the faith. From leveraging digital platforms for good to finding the sacred in service and social justice, we explored how to present the timeless truth of the Gospel in a language that today’s youth can understand and embrace.

While the topics were enriching, the true grace of the retreat lay in the moments of celebration and communion. The togetherness during meals, the laughter during group activities, and the quiet moments of personal prayer created a strong family spirit. The highlight of our time together was undoubtedly the celebration of the Eucharist, where we brought to the altar all our hopes, challenges, and renewed commitments. It was a beautiful reminder that our mission is not ours, but God’s, and that we undertake it together as a community of faith.

Participants from Saint Mary’s left with renewed energy, practical ideas, and a deeper sense of their vocation as educators and evangelizers in the spirit of Don Bosco. At SCOF, we are immensely grateful for their “yes” to this time of formation and for their passionate commitment to the youth of their parish. They are a testament that the Salesian charism remains alive and relevant, ready to face the future with hope and joy.

By the Salesian Center for Ongoing Formation (SCOF)

Editora: Judy Alvarez

¿Dónde encuentran a Dios?”.

The Salesian Center for Ongoing Formation-Berkeley hosts a weekend formation retreat for Catholic parish leaders and volunteers.
