Sirach 3 leads the way. A proud man puts himself in danger of being belittled.“ … An attentive [humble] ear is the joy of the wise. Water quenches [pride’s] flaming fire, and alms atone for sins.” Friends, listen to sound advice and let humility quench supposed superiority of wealth or mind.

Instead, says the Psalm, “The just rejoice and exult before God” [not self’]. “They are glad and rejoice. Sing to God, chant praise to his name, whose name is the LORD.” O Praise Him!

Also, says Hebrews, “You have approached Mount Zion and the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem.” Humble persons even now draw close to that living God. A taste of what God promises to the just is His pledge, that one also draws near to “Countless angels in festal gathering, and the assembly of the firstborn enrolled in heaven, and God the judge of all.” If only with contrite and humble hearts we never cease to try to come near to God, we also approach the beginning of heaven on earth. Through Jesus and His blood shed for us, says Hebrews, this is state of the just.

Jesus continues on our behalf to preach the importance of humility to those at a banquet. Several were seeking to take most honorable places nearest the host and Jesus. Those too invited to salvation in the kingdom of heaven may think we are better than others. Do any of us think we deserve the best of places at the banquet of heaven? Careful, says Jesus. You may be headed for great embarrassment. Or as at the pharisee’s banquet, you may be asked to go down to the lowest place.

Jesus offers us a place in heaven, and we will be perfectly satisfied, totally satisfied, in the measure we deserve, and together with Him in glory. He described our presence this way: “Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” The words of Jesus are Truth.

“From desire to be exalted,

From the desire to be preferred,

Deliver us O Lord.”

———–

Canten a Dios, canten

By Fr.
