Known for his broad and contagious smile, Br Mojela was a vibrant presence within the Salesian community, even serving as an observer during the recent GC29 at Valdocco at the invitation of the Rector Major. He dedicated 22 years of his life to Salesian consecrated apostolic service, beginning with his first profession in 2003.

Brother Mojela, affectionately known as “Mojo,” was inspired by St. John Bosco’s mission and first encountered the Salesians 25 years ago in his native Maputsoe (St. Luke Parish), Lesotho, the first Salesian presence in the country. In his first interview, he expressed his calling: “I want to become a Salesian to help young people realize that liquor and drugs are not the keys to success, but the foundation on the Lord.” Drawn by the Salesian community’s family spirit, he embraced his vocation wholeheartedly.

Following his first profession, Br Mojela journeyed through formation houses in South Africa (Cape Town, Benoni, and Ennerdale) and Kenya (Nairobi). His ministry focused on youth, particularly in non-formal education settings like the Oratory (Maputsoe and Maseru, Lesotho), Youth Centres (Walkerville, South Africa), and parish-based TVET programs in Ennerdale, South Africa.

Br Mojela’s remarkable ability to connect with young people through his joyful energy, humility, and vibrant witness to God’s love left a lasting impact. Whether leading icebreakers, animating group dances, or simply being present in the lives of young people, his Oratorian spirit and heartfelt interest touched countless lives.

On the day of his perpetual profession in 2010, he shared a personal prayer that reflected his deep faith: “Lord, let your lamp burn with the oil of my life and let me be reborn in you and see the world through you in the right way, so that all my thoughts, words, and actions can become a hymn of praise to You.”

Thousands gathered to honor Br Mojela’s life at two memorial services—one at All Saints Parish in Ennerdale, Johannesburg, and another at St. Luke Parish in Maputsoe, Lesotho. His funeral, held on August 23, was presided over by Bishop Emeritus Augustinus Bane, OMI, of the Leribe Diocese. Attendees included children, young people, parishioners, clergy, and members of the Salesian Family.

In his funeral homily, Fr. Francois Dufour, SDB, captured the essence of Br Mojela’s life: “He who believed in Christ and ate of the bread of eternal life lives! We are not here to bury him but to bid him ‘tsela tsheu—tsamaya ka khotso—bon voyage—hamba kahle’ to the ultimate homeland of us all, into the mystery of the empty tomb of the risen Christ. He has gone to the Salesian garden, joyful life with Jesus, Mary, and Don Bosco!”

The Salesians and SYM members continue to collect personal stories of Br Mojela, ensuring his legacy as a true friend of the youth lives on.
