(Bellflower, California)<\/strong> – At\u00a0Iglesia de St. Dominic Savio<\/strong> the quincea\u00f1era celebration is being reimagined through the lens of the Salesian mission. What is often seen only as a cultural tradition, a young woman\u2019s coming of age, has become, in our parish, a\u00a0powerful tool for family formation and evangelization<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Salesian Response to a Cultural Tradition<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Quincea\u00f1era Retreat<\/strong> at St. Dominic Savio was designed with the Salesian spirit in mind: youth serving youth, families rediscovering God together, and faith rooted in joy and dialogue<\/strong>. Many of the girls who prepare for their quincea\u00f1era come only because of custom; attending Mass or living their faith is not always a priority. Yet by starting from this cultural moment, we can open doors to encounter God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Two-Part Experience<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The retreat begins with an online training<\/strong>, where both quincea\u00f1eras and their parents reflect on the meaning of faith, family, and community in the quincea\u00f1era tradition. The second part is a four-hour in-person retreat<\/strong>, which includes prayer, icebreakers, cultural reflections, and family dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most impactful moments is the parent\u2013teen exchange activity<\/strong>, where parents are paired with teens who are not their own children, and vice versa. This allows young people and adults to speak freely, to listen to each other\u2019s struggles, and to discover a new perspective on family life. Laughter, tears, and healing often emerge in this sacred exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Facing Real Challenges<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The retreat also creates space for conversations about family struggles<\/strong>. We speak openly about \u201ctoxic parenting\u201d patterns such as constant criticism, emotional absence, or overprotection that can harm family relationships. By naming these realities in a safe environment, parents and teens find courage to reflect: What kind of family do we want to be? What kind of disciples of Christ are we called to become?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building a Family Plan of Faith<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each retreat ends with a Strategic Family Plan<\/strong>. Families commit to three concrete steps to strengthen their relationships and grow closer to God. These simple commitments, whether praying together, sharing meals, or choosing kindness in daily interactions, embody the Salesian call to holiness in everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Evangelization in Action<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At St. Dominic Savio, the Quincea\u00f1era Retreat has become more than preparation for a celebration. It is evangelization in action<\/strong>. It is a way of meeting families in a moment they value and helping them rediscover God\u2019s presence in their lives. It is a Salesian good practice, showing how culture can be a bridge to faith, and how families can be transformed when they encounter Christ in community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the spirit of Don Bosco, we believe that every young person, and every family, is a seed of hope for the Church and the world. Through this retreat, we have seen how tradition can be transformed into a moment of grace, joy, and renewal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
