In truly Christian relationships we are called upon to remove any unfairness from our dealings, especially with the poor and weak.

St. Paul, exalted in the heavens, was now in chains facing death as he wrote to his beloved Timothy. Aware of his reduced state, Paul saw himself as a sacrifice being offered to God. He was comforted to be approaching the finish line and knew that a crown of victory awaited him for all he had done in the Name of Jesus. If faithful, Timothy and his flock would share the same consolation Aware of our lowliness each of us too can say as did poor Paul, abandoned and deserted, “I have finished the race; I have kept the faith. From now on the crown of righteousness awaits me, which the Lord, the just judge will award to me.” We join Paul, no matter our troubles, in fighting the good fight and running a good and victorious race.

St. Luke has served us well by recalling a parable Jesus used to help us defeat self-admiration, too common a human trait. What was a key to receive God’s approval and help? Well, there was a showoff Pharisee very observant of the Law but sadly, very proud of it. He stood praising himself before the Lord. Instead, a tax collector humbly confessed his lowliness. Who won the approval of Jesus and found the key to heaven? “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” Humbly aware of failings, implore God’s mercy. He heard you!
