Ed Liptak, SDB

Why does a building of mortar and stone deserve such esteem as to set aside a Sunday? Because it celebrates the Mother Church of Roman Catholicism. Though St Peter’s Basilica was built over the tomb of Peter, it was completed only in 1626. It lies within the Vatican where the Pope lives and governs, but his Cathedral is not there. Pope Sylvester I in 324 consecrated the Basilica of St John Lateran, and it is to this day the Cathedral of Rome, the oldest church in Rome, able to symbolize the fall of pagan Rome to Christianity.

Our readings from Ezikiel and Psalm 46 link the Basilica with St. John the Baptist. Attached to it now but once separate from the Basilica, a Baptistry was built in 424, likely over the site of a baptismal pool used earlier. Inside the Basilica rests a relic from the skull of the Baptist buried in an image of his head. Then from Ezekiel, “the flowing, life giving water” (like John’s Jordan); the Psalm’s “water from the Temple” (from the Basilica); “waters that gladden the city of God,” (the New Jerusalem, the Church), “holy dwelling of the Most High,” all easily associated with Baptism.

St. Paul offers added thoughts glorifying God’s life in us. In one place he begs us to realize that we ourselves are “Temples of the living God” (2 Cor 6:16-7:1). In today’s citation he wrote, “You are God’s building” built on the foundation of Jesus Christ. Indeed, each of you ‘”s God’s Temple, the dwelling of God. His presence sanctifies you.” Never destroy that temple, Paul warns, by sin! So, gaze on the mortar and stone of the Basilica, but turn inward too and hear the Baptist, “Make(keep) straight the way of the Lord.”

Turn now to the source of holiness, to Christ the Lord, in St. John’s Gospel soon after Jesus had revealed His divine power at the Wedding Feast. John found it contributed to his plan in writing to further reveal Jesus’ mighty power. Our Church likewise finds the passage excellent to emphasize Christ’s lesson on the holiness of the Temple—of the Lateran Basilica, and the countless numbers of churches built after the model of the Mother Church of all churches.

Thus, Christ claimed His own body to be the Temple of the Living God. “Destroy this temple,” He said, “and in three days I will raise it up.” Thus, early in John’s Gospel, Chapter 2, does Jesus declare the greatest of all signs, His Resurrection. We too, Temples of the Living God, must travel from our churches here to the magnificent Church of the Kingdom of Heaven.

“Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” (1 Cor 9:3)
