Ed Liptak, SDB

When Mary visited her kinswoman Elizabeth, the full realization of all that took place back at Nazareth dawned. She truly was to be Mother of God. She burst into song, and in one of its verses she marveled, “The Mighty One has done great things for me, and Holy is His Name.” In another burst of realization she exclaimed, “He has helped Israel His servant, remembering his Mercy, according to his promise to our fathers, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.” Thus began her waiting for the birth of her divine Child.

Thus, also, does Mary strike the Advent theme of yearning for the coming of our Savior. Isaiah by Messianic prophecy, gave us a longer look at the One whom Israel awaited. He would be of David’s line (Jesse was David’s father). The Spirit of God would be upon Him, strong and wise in judgment and great in knowledge and respect for God, able to penetrate the curtain hiding who men truly are, but treating the afflicted with justice. And since He is just, He strikes the ruthless and slays the wicked.

Thus, Mary’s promised One, the Messiah, the Savior, would beget peace signified poetically by Isaiah: the wolf guest in the lamb-fold; the leopard with the goat kid; the young lion gazing with the calf, and only a child shepherding them. The bear and the cow are able to live together as friends, and the lion and the ox are feeding on hay together. … So also with humans:

A baby will play over a cobra’s den and a grown child over a rattler’s lair. The Messiah, when he come,s will reverse the very ways of nature!

The ‘Awaited’ of Mary, magnificent in holiness for He is God, lowly in his humanity for he came as a helpless infant, it is He too whom we await, God and Man in full wisdom and justice. We may gasp at Isaiah’s description, but when Simeon, inspired by the Spirit, cradled the Infant Jesus in his arms, he saw ‘salvation’ of all nations, ‘light’ for the gentiles, and the ‘glory’ of Abraham. It is He for whom we wait.

St Matthew’s Gospel advises us, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” There is no hiding from the Master of this Kingdom. He came, and He comes, in greatness and littleness, seeking our embrace and desiring our love, not our reluctant following. He wants to gather us, but there is such a thing with Him, too, as “unquenchable fire.”

¿A Quién Esperamos?
