{"id":28086,"date":"2026-01-09T17:46:40","date_gmt":"2026-01-10T01:46:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/salesianbulletin.org\/?p=28086"},"modified":"2026-01-09T17:46:40","modified_gmt":"2026-01-10T01:46:40","slug":"pope-at-consistory-its-not-the-church-that-attracts-but-christ","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/salesianbulletin.org\/es\/2026\/01\/09\/pope-at-consistory-its-not-the-church-that-attracts-but-christ\/","title":{"rendered":"Pope at Consistory: \u201cIt\u2019s Not the Church that Attracts but Christ\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>(ANS \u2013 Vatican City)<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Pope Leo XIV opened the&nbsp;<strong>Extraordinary Consistory of Cardinals<\/strong>&nbsp;el&nbsp;<strong>Wednesday, January 7, 2026<\/strong>, recalling that Christ draws us to follow Him and warning that division within the Church scatters the faithful. \u201cI am here to listen,\u201d Pope Leo XIV said in his opening address at the Extraordinary Consistory of Cardinals taking place in the Vatican on&nbsp;<strong>January 7\u20138<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pope began by expressing his joy at welcoming the Cardinals to Rome on the day after the Epiphany, praying that the Holy Spirit would guide them during these two intense yet important days of reflection and dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pope said that their day and a half together \u201cwill point the way for our path ahead.\u201d \u201cWe must not arrive at a text,\u201d he said, \u201cbut continue a conversation that will help me in serving the mission of the entire Church.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Holy Father acknowledged that the College of Cardinals is a very diverse body, \u201cenriched by a wide range of backgrounds, cultures, ecclesial and social traditions, formative and academic paths, pastoral experiences\u2014not to mention personal characteristics and traits.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are called to get to know one another and to engage in dialogue, so that we may work together in serving the Church,\u201d he said. \u201cI hope that we can grow in communion and thus offer a model of collegiality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his remarks, the Holy Father reminded participants of the significance of the Second Vatican Council and reflected on his predecessor Popes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI invite us to pay close attention to what Pope Benedict pointed out as the \u2018power\u2019 that drives this movement of attraction,\u201d he said. \u201cIndeed, this power is&nbsp;<em>charis<\/em>, it is&nbsp;<em>agape<\/em>\u2014it is the love of God that became incarnate in Jesus Christ and that, in the Holy Spirit, is given to the Church, sanctifying all her actions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFurthermore,\u201d Pope Leo emphasized, \u201cit is not the Church that attracts, but Christ; and if a Christian or an ecclesial community attracts, it is because through that \u2018channel\u2019 flows the lifeblood of charity that pours forth from the Heart of the Savior.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile unity attracts, division scatters,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Holy Father noted that the Cardinals would reflect on two themes, chosen from among:&nbsp;<em>Evangelii Gaudium<\/em>, that is, the mission of the Church in today\u2019s world;&nbsp;<em>Praedicate Evangelium<\/em>, namely the service of the Holy See, especially to the particular Churches; the Synod and synodality as both an instrument and a style of cooperation; and the liturgy, the source and summit of Christian life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, \u201cdue to time constraints, and in order to encourage a truly in-depth analysis,\u201d he said, only two of these themes would be addressed specifically, guided by the following question: \u201cLooking at the path of the next one or two years, what considerations and priorities could guide the action of the Holy Father and of the Curia regarding each theme?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This, he explained, would be the Cardinals\u2019 way of proceeding as they seek to be \u201cattentive to the heart, mind, and spirit of each person, listening to one another and expressing only the essential point in a concise manner, so that everyone can speak.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the future,\u201d the Holy Father said, \u201cthis way of listening to one another, seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and walking together will continue to be a great help for the Petrine ministry entrusted to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEven the way in which we learn to work together, with fraternity and sincere friendship,\u201d he added, \u201ccan give rise to something new\u2014something that brings both the present and the future into focus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pope Leo XIV concluded by praying that the Holy Spirit would guide the Cardinals in their reflections, under the gaze of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>By Deborah Castellano Lubov<\/em><br><em>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaticannews.va\/en\/pope\/news\/2026-01\/pope-at-consistory-its-not-the-church-that-attracts-but-christ.html\">Vatican News<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(ANS \u2013 Vatican City)&nbsp;\u2013 Pope Leo XIV opened the&nbsp;Extraordinary Consistory of Cardinals&nbsp;on&nbsp;Wednesday, January 7, 2026, recalling that Christ draws us to follow Him and warning that division within the Church scatters the faithful. \u201cI am here to listen,\u201d Pope Leo XIV said in his opening address at the Extraordinary Consistory of Cardinals taking place in the Vatican on&nbsp;January 7\u20138.
