The initiative brings together cultural reflection, educational offerings, artistic events, and liturgical celebrations, providing the Salesian Family, the faithful, and the wider city with meaningful opportunities to rediscover the relevance of Don Bosco and his charism.

January: A Truly “Salesian” Month

The program began earlier this month, continuing a long-standing tradition that makes all of January a distinctly “Salesian” time. Among the first initiatives was Three Salesian Tuesdays in the Basilica, dedicated this year to the theme “Don Bosco, His Letters, and Our Time.” Held on January 13, 20, and 27, these evenings explored key aspects of Don Bosco’s thought and action through readings from his letters.

The reflections addressed his relationships with civil and aristocratic institutions, the ecclesial and educational world, and his missionary experience—offering both historical and contemporary perspectives on his pastoral and social commitment.

Artistic and Cultural Events

Alongside the cultural reflections, the program also includes artistic and outreach events. On Saturday, January 24, the feast of St. Francis de Sales, Patron of the Salesian Congregation, a concert in honor of Don Bosco was held in the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians, featuring students from Cavour High School in Turin.

On Wednesday, January 28, the film The Oratory (2021) will be screened. The film focuses on the Saint of Youth and his continuing inspiration in today’s missions. This international production offers another meaningful way to engage with Don Bosco’s charism.

The Vigil: A Day of Prayer and Spiritual Preparation

The heart of the celebrations will begin on Friday, January 30, the vigil of the feast, marked by moments of prayer and deep spiritual participation in the Basilica.

In the afternoon, the Rosary—led by the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians—will precede the evening Eucharistic celebration, presided over by Bishop Daniele Salera of Ivrea. Following Mass, First Vespers of the Solemnity will be presided over by the Rector Major of the Salesians, Successor of Don Bosco and center of unity for the Congregation and the Salesian Family.

The evening will conclude with the traditional Vigil of Don Bosco, along with the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Animated by the Salesian novices of Colle Don Bosco, the vigil will offer a space for prayer and reflection, recalling the spiritual heart of the Salesian charism and Don Bosco’s total gift of self for young people.

January 31: The Feast Day

On Saturday, January 31, the feast day itself, the Basilica will host a full schedule of Eucharistic celebrations and liturgies designed to renew devotion to the Saint of Youth among all the faithful.

Renewing the Salesian Mission Today

The many initiatives taking place in Valdocco reflect the Salesian tradition of uniting faith, culture, and educational commitment. They offer a privileged opportunity to renew the apostolic mission of the Salesian Family within today’s Church and society.

(ANS – Turin) – In preparation for the Solemnity of St. John Bosco, to be celebrated on Saturday, January 31, the Salesian complex of Valdocco and the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians in Turin are once again offering a wide-ranging program for 2026.
