{"id":28699,"date":"2026-02-04T14:44:39","date_gmt":"2026-02-04T22:44:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/salesianbulletin.org\/?p=28699"},"modified":"2026-02-04T14:44:39","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T22:44:39","slug":"returning-with-a-salesian-heart-to-the-educational-and-pastoral-value-of-sport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/salesianbulletin.org\/es\/2026\/02\/04\/returning-with-a-salesian-heart-to-the-educational-and-pastoral-value-of-sport\/","title":{"rendered":"Returning with a Salesian Heart to the Educational and Pastoral Value of Sport"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>(ANS \u2013 Rome)<\/em> \u2014 \u201cReturning with a Salesian heart to the educational and pastoral value of sport\u201d was the guiding theme of the reflection meeting held at <strong>Salesian Headquarters<\/strong> in <strong>Roma<\/strong> on <strong>Monday, February 2, 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those present at the gathering included the President of the <strong>International Salesian Youth Sports Association (PGS-I)<\/strong>, <strong>Georg Leibold<\/strong>; the General Councilors for Youth Ministry of the <strong>Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (FMA)<\/strong> and the <strong>Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB)<\/strong>, <strong>Sr. Runita Borja<\/strong> y <strong>Fr. Rafael Bejarano<\/strong>; and the Youth Ministry Delegates for FMA and SDB for PGS-I, <strong>Sr. Francesca Scibetta<\/strong> y <strong>Fr. Jerry Matsoumbou<\/strong>. The Vice President of PGS-I, <strong>Fr. Tibor Reimer<\/strong> of <strong>Slovakia<\/strong>, joined the meeting remotely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Prayerful Beginning and a Renewed Vision<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Rector Major, <strong>Fr. Fabio Attard<\/strong>, led the opening prayer, encouraging those present to continue animating the Association while renewing awareness that sport is one of the privileged pathways of the <strong>Salesian charism<\/strong> for reaching young people and accompanying them in their integral growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mission and Identity of the International Salesian Youth Sports Association<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President <strong>Leibold<\/strong> then presented the current reality of the <strong>International Salesian Youth Sports Association<\/strong>, an organization founded following the <strong>Salesian Youth Movement \u2013 Italy<\/strong> to promote opportunities for encounter through sport among young people from FMA and SDB communities in European provinces and other interested countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These young people follow a path of integral formation rooted in the <strong>Salesian educational tradition<\/strong> and, through PGS-I events and games, experience the joy of being together and sharing the same values with peers from other nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Association is the fruit of the initiative of <strong>Salesians<\/strong> y <strong>Salesian Sisters<\/strong> who, together with lay collaborators, continue to believe in sport and play as essential elements of Salesian charismatic identity. This vision is reflected in the message of <strong>Fr. Pascual Ch\u00e1vez Villanueva<\/strong> to the <strong>Salesian Youth Movement (SYM)<\/strong> in 2006, recalling how <strong>St. John Bosco<\/strong> recognized from the very beginning of the Oratory the educational power of play and sport. He made the playground the heart of his houses, creating a joyful, spontaneous, and family-like youth environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within this setting, Don Bosco proposed a cheerful Christian way of life capable of leading young people to holiness. Sport thus became an important element of the <strong>Salesian educational and pastoral proposal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Salesian presence in the world of sport remains significant today, reaching many young people who might otherwise lack access to education. Fidelity to characteristic Salesian choices remains essential: the centrality of the young person, the active and guiding presence of educators among youth, the courage to offer educational proposals that challenge young people to grow, and a steadfast commitment to evangelization. In the sporting world, Salesians are called to promote an alternative vision of sport\u2014one that places the human person and integral development at its center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sport as an Integral Part of Youth Ministry<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fr. Rafael Bejarano<\/strong> y <strong>Sr. Runita Borja<\/strong> emphasized the priority of initiating a process of reflection and renewed awareness regarding the value of sports ministry as an integral part of <strong>Youth Ministry<\/strong>.
