Ed Liptak, SDB

Long before Christ, Moses urged that we keep God’s commandments faithfully. He declared, “This great nation is truly a wise and discerning people”…”For what great nation is there that has gods so close to it as the LORD our God is to us whenever we call upon him.” Thus was the Law set as the source of ancient Wisdom. Living by the Law was living wisely.

Thus also did the elder Sirach long after Moses and only about two centuries before Christ instruct his son, “If you trust in God, you too shall live; [the Law] will save you;” See Sirach longing for the safety of his son, and picture yourself praying for salvation of a loved one: “Before man are life and death, good and evil; whichever he chooses shall be given him. Immense is the wisdom of the Lord.”

St. Paul goes a step farther. The Commandments alone cannot save. They must be kept with faith in Christ, who by His Cross has He thrown open salvation to those who love and obey God. The saving value of the Commandments comes only through the redemptive sacrifice of the Lord. In Christ is our salvation. Wisdom, whether of Jew or Gentile, cannot suffice. Christ is the hidden Wisdom determined by God before the ages for our glory. We of the New Law, moved by the Spirit that Jesus won for us, can by his Passion and death, possess Wisdom greater than that of old.

Jesus takes us farthest toward human perfection. He said, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.” Not only would he fulfill the law, but truly lead us closest to God along the way to goodness. Jesus guides all humanity toward purity of spirit, purity of thought and desire. Do we want to enter the Kingdom of Heaven?

‘Don’t kill,’ is not enough. but also don’t harbor anger against your brother.
Not only ‘Don’t commit adultery,’ but don’t look at a person with lustful intent.
