Ed Liptak, SDB <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During Lent it is wise to reawaken awareness of a sad truth. We are constantly under pressure from our human weakness and through assault of the evil one to allow sin to crawl into our lives. Our first Lenten Sunday readings remind us that sinfulness is part of human history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the beginning man and woman were created good with goodness all around them. But God did leave them a test of their obedience. Prompted by an evil spirit, they tasted a forbidden fruit thinking it would make them great as God. Instead, they learned they had done wrong, that there was good and evil, that they had split from God. In guilt they hid their nakedness. Sin had entered the world and their struggle with wickedness began. But God still loved his creatures and promised that an offspring of theirs would in the end redeem them from evil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">St. Paul preached endlessly of the Redeemer, Jesus Christ, that promised Savior. This Sunday Paul teaches that from Adam until Moses the chief sign of sin was \u2018death.\u2019 After Moses till Jesus, \u2018Sin\u2019 was measured by violation of God\u2019s Law. By Adam\u2019s sin many died, Paul wrote, but \u201cjust as through the disobedience of that one man the many were made sinners, so, through the obedience of the one, the many will be made righteous.\u201d We know the \u2018obedient one\u2019 was Jesus, and how much He suffered for our sake. Lent keeps the suffering of Jesus, the cost of our redemption, ever in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the darkest hour of our redemption \u2013 Jesus called it Satan\u2019s darkest hour \u2013 terrible suffering was paid to atone for humanity\u2019s disobedience. By choosing today\u2019s Gospel, our Church points to the start of Jesus\u2019s combat with evil on our behalf. How sinister was the devil\u2019s attack: He\u2019s starving, I\u2019ll tempt him with food. He exalts himself saying he is Son of God. I\u2019ll tell him to toss himself down from on high onto stone and prove how much his Father loves him. Hel says he\u2019s from a Kingdom. I\u2019ll, tempt hi, with world power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Lord Jesus, in each of those temptations borne for us, you demonstrated your power over evil. Walk with us then, Redeemer Lord. Alone we are lacking. You, Jesus, are fully wise and mighty. Accompany us in our battle for Eternal Life.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-coblocks-dynamic-separator has-background has-dark-gray-color is-style-line\" style=\"height:50px\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Llamados al Combate<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Durante la Cuaresma es prudente reavivar la conciencia de una triste verdad. Estamos constantemente bajo la presi\u00f3n de nuestra debilidad humana y bajo el asalto del maligno para permitir que el pecado se infiltre en nuestras vidas. Las lecturas del primer domingo de Cuaresma nos recuerdan que la pecaminosidad forma parte de la historia humana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Desde el principio, el hombre y la mujer fueron creados buenos, con bondad a su alrededor. Pero Dios les dej\u00f3 una prueba de obediencia. Incitados por un esp\u00edritu maligno, probaron el fruto prohibido pensando que los har\u00eda grandes como Dios. En cambio, aprendieron que hab\u00edan obrado mal, que exist\u00edan el bien y el mal, y que se hab\u00edan separado de Dios. Por culpa, escondieron su desnudez. El pecado hab\u00eda entrado en el mundo y comenz\u00f3 su lucha contra la maldad. Pero Dios segu\u00eda amando a sus criaturas y prometi\u00f3 que un descendiente suyo los redimir\u00eda finalmente del mal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">San Pablo predic\u00f3 incansablemente acerca del Redentor, Jesucristo, el Salvador prometido. Este domingo, Pablo ense\u00f1a que desde Ad\u00e1n hasta Mois\u00e9s la principal se\u00f1al del pecado fue la \u201cmuerte\u201d. Desde Mois\u00e9s hasta Jes\u00fas, el \u201cpecado\u201d se med\u00eda por la violaci\u00f3n de la Ley de Dios. Por el pecado de Ad\u00e1n muchos murieron, escribi\u00f3 Pablo, pero \u201cas\u00ed como por la desobediencia de un solo hombre muchos fueron constituidos pecadores, as\u00ed tambi\u00e9n por la obediencia de uno solo muchos ser\u00e1n constituidos justos\u201d. Sabemos que el \u201cobediente\u201d fue Jes\u00fas y cu\u00e1nto sufri\u00f3 por nosotros. La Cuaresma mantiene siempre presente el sufrimiento de Jes\u00fas, el costo de nuestra redenci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En la hora m\u00e1s oscura de nuestra redenci\u00f3n \u2014Jes\u00fas la llam\u00f3 la hora m\u00e1s oscura de Satan\u00e1s\u2014 se pag\u00f3 un terrible sufrimiento para expiar la desobediencia de la humanidad. Al elegir el Evangelio de hoy, nuestra Iglesia se\u00f1ala el comienzo del combate de Jes\u00fas contra el mal en nuestro favor. \u00a1Qu\u00e9 siniestro fue el ataque del diablo!: \u201cTiene hambre, lo tentar\u00e9 con comida. Se exalta diciendo que es Hijo de Dios; le dir\u00e9 que se arroje desde lo alto sobre las piedras y que demuestre cu\u00e1nto lo ama su Padre. Dice que viene de un Reino; lo tentar\u00e9 con el poder del mundo\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Se\u00f1or Jes\u00fas, en cada una de esas tentaciones que soportaste por nosotros, demostraste tu poder sobre el mal. Camina con nosotros, Se\u00f1or Redentor. Solos somos d\u00e9biles. T\u00fa, Jes\u00fas, eres plenamente sabio y poderoso.
