Ed Liptak, SDB

St. John’s Gospel is “marked” by events that led Jesus into conflict with the self-styled “keepers” of the Law. They despised the Samaritans, yet Jesus chose a sinful Samaritan woman to reveal that He was the Messiah. She and her townspeople came to believe in Jesus, the Savior of the world. John also recounts the healing of a man born blind. The “keepers’” anger toward Jesus grew because He defied the Sabbath. It was not the first time. They called Jesus a sinner. Instead, Jesus wanted them to believe that He was from God, superior to the Law. They sought to stone Him. This week, John’s “marker” is Lazarus, raised from the dead. Today’s two prior readings build the case that the power of Jesus is from above.

Ezekiel, the prophet of Israel’s release from Babylonian captivity, spoke poetically in the name of the Lord: “O my people, I will open your graves and raise you from them.” These words came true, as did others: “Then you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves and raise you from them, O my people.” And God kept His promises—they were freed! If only, in the time of Jesus, they had believed that He came from God and was one with Him. Lord, may we firmly believe!

St. Paul proclaimed in faith that we are not merely flesh and human life, but are also gifted with the life and Spirit of God. Yes, Jesus lived among us. He rose from the dead. He lives—and He lives in us—our God who shared in our human flesh. Hear Paul’s unshakable faith and let it be ours: “The one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through His Spirit dwelling in you.” Intercede for us, Paul, that we may share your strong faith and rejoice together in the light and life of the eternal God.

And St. John, thank you as well for preserving for us the words of Jesus. Thank you for helping us understand that the raising of Lazarus from the darkness and decay of the tomb was an assurance that the Lord Himself would be raised—and that we, too, would be raised through faith in Him. The fury of the “keepers” was but fuel for the fire of hatred consuming them.

So, Martha, share with us your faith: “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world.” And Jesus, we believe You: “Father, I thank You for hearing Me. I know that You always hear Me, but because of the crowd I have said this, that they may believe You sent Me.” Then came the astounding command: “Lazarus, come out!” And we believe.

God of Light. Despreciaban a los samaritanos, pero Jesús eligió a una mujer samaritana pecadora para revelar que Él era el Mesías.
