Ed Liptak, SDB

Women reported the empty tomb. Peter and John verified it, and the appearances confirm that indeed Jesus had Risen. Peter’s Pentecost speech in Acts shows how deeply those appearances together with the Spirit’s tongues of fire had emboldened the faith of our infant Church.

Peter, with the Apostles fearlessly proclaimed to the unbelieving crowd, “Jesus the Nazarene was a man commended to you by God with mighty deeds, wonders, and signs.” Besides these awesome signs, Peter bluntly accused them of fulfilling their own scriptures, “You killed [this Jesus}, using lawless men to crucify him. But God raised him up, releasing him from the throes of death.” We praise God and we believe,“ God did raise Jesus;
of this we are all witnesses. “Exalted at the right hand of God, he received the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father and poured him forth, as you see and hear.”

In the second reading Peter speaks tenderly to his beloved believers and to us, ransomed from things past by the blood of Jesus, the new Paschal Lamb. He urges, through the living Christ raised by God in glory, bend and believe in God. Place your faith and hope in Him. Say, Father, we bless and thank You. Jesus, beloved Son, we trust in you.

Last Sunday we met we met Thomas struggling to believe. Likewise, In the opening stanza of today’s Psalm we meet this saying: “I say to the LORD, “My Lord are you!” Now the downhearted pair of today’s Gospel struggle, and so do we. The two on their way to Emaus have heard all about the Risen Christ firsthand: the women, the empty tomb, the angels, how Peter and John verified the women. Hearing it, also we might verify, “That’s just what we heard from the Easter scriptures.”

Jesus stepped in to settle the pair’s doubts. So the Church steps in to settle any of ours. Jesus faced the dismayed pair. So the Church calls out to us saying “It’s all in the Easter scriptures.” Then hear Jesus invite Himself, “Allow me to dine with you.” Gaze at the priest and see Jesus take bread, bless the bread, raise it, break it , give it to you. Faith is God’s gift to you. Find it in His Body and Blood!”

SEE. HEAR. BELIEVE. Eternal Life Awaits.

Pedro, con los Apóstoles proclamando sin miedo a la multitud incrédula: «Jesús el Nazareno fue un hombre encomendado por Dios con grandes obras, maravillas y signos.» Además de estas asombrosas señales, Pedro les acusó sin rodeos de cumplir sus propias escrituras: «Mataste [a este Jesús}, usando a hombres sin ley para crucificarle. Pero Dios lo levantó, liberándolo de los estertores de la muerte. Alabamos a Dios y creemos que Dios resucitó a Jesús;

MIRA. ESCUCHA. CRÉE. La vida eterna nos espera.

By Fr. Ed Liptak, SDB Women reported the empty tomb.
