{"id":30290,"date":"2026-04-21T14:26:50","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T21:26:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/salesianbulletin.org\/?p=30290"},"modified":"2026-04-21T14:26:50","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T21:26:50","slug":"pope-leo-urges-the-nation-follow-mary-to-be-like-her-workers-for-justice-and-peacemakers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/salesianbulletin.org\/es\/2026\/04\/21\/pope-leo-urges-the-nation-follow-mary-to-be-like-her-workers-for-justice-and-peacemakers\/","title":{"rendered":"Pope Leo Urges the Nation: Follow Mary \u201cto Be, Like Her, Workers for Justice and Peacemakers\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Photo \u00a9: Vatican Media<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(<strong>ANS \u2013 Luanda<\/strong>) \u2013 \u201cI come to Africa primarily as a shepherd, as head of the Catholic Church, to be with, to celebrate with, to encourage, and to accompany all African Catholics.\u201d With these clear words, <strong>Pope Leo XIV<\/strong> reiterated the purpose of his extended journey to Africa during the flight on <strong>Saturday, April 18, 2026<\/strong>, from Cameroon to Angola.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the widely attended Masses during the final stages of his visit to Cameroon\u2014Friday\u2019s Mass at <strong>Japona Stadium in Douala<\/strong>, attended by 120,000 faithful, and the farewell Mass on Saturday at <strong>Yaound\u00e9 Military Airport<\/strong>, attended by approximately 200,000 people, during which he encouraged the people of Cameroon to remain steadfast in Christ so as to be \u201cthe salt and light of this land\u201d\u2014the Holy Father arrived in Angola, the third stage of his apostolic journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pope\u2019s schedule for this phase of his African tour is full, under the motto: <strong>\u201cPope Leo XIV, Pilgrim of Hope, Reconciliation, and Peace, Blesses Angola.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It began on Saturday afternoon with a courtesy visit to the President of the Republic, <strong>Jo\u00e3o Manuel Gon\u00e7alves Louren\u00e7o<\/strong>, followed by a meeting in the Protocol Hall with approximately 400 political and religious leaders, business leaders, and representatives of civil society and the cultural sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On this occasion, the Pontiff first remembered the victims of the recent floods in Benguela, which caused around 30 deaths and displaced more than 34,000 people. He then highlighted the \u201cscars\u201d left by exploitation driven by predatory and \u201coverbearing interests\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWe must break this chain of interests that reduces reality and life itself to a commodity\u2026 How much suffering, how many deaths, how many social and environmental disasters are brought about by this logic of extractivism!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Encouraging the building of a renewed nation\u2014one that \u201ccan grow significantly\u201d if its leaders believe in the \u201cmultifaceted nature of its wealth\u201d\u2014<strong>Pope Leo XIV<\/strong> urged local leaders:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cDo not be afraid of disagreement; do not suppress the ideas of the young or the dreams of the elderly; and know how to manage conflicts by transforming them into paths of renewal. Place the common good before every particular interest, never confusing your own part with the whole. History will then vindicate you, even if in the near term some may oppose you.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sunday\u2019s Key Events<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two major events marked <strong>Sunday, April 19, 2026<\/strong>: the Mass for the <strong>Third Sunday of Easter<\/strong> in Kilamba and, in the afternoon, the Rosary on the esplanade in front of the <strong>Mam\u00e3 Muxima Shrine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the Mass, attended by approximately 100,000 faithful, and reflecting on the Gospel account of the <strong>disciples of Emmaus<\/strong>, <strong>Pope Leo XIV<\/strong> compared Angola\u2019s journey to that of the two disciples, noting that in the face of setbacks, people can lose hope and become \u201cparalyzed by discouragement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He emphasized that the solution does not come from human strategies alone, but as a gift from above:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThe Lord walks alongside the two disappointed disciples, who are running out of hope, and, becoming their traveling companion, helps them to piece together the fragments of that story, to look beyond the pain\u2026 Here, too, for us, for you, dear Angolan brothers and sisters, is the path to a new beginning: on the one hand, the certainty that the Lord accompanies us and has compassion on us; on the other, the commitment he asks of us.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, the Holy Father addressed the local reality, urging people not to mix faith with \u201cmagical and superstitious elements that do not aid the spiritual journey.\u201d He also prayed for the people of Angola\u2014whose history has been marked by a long civil war\u2014that the Church may accompany them and listen to \u201cthe cry of its children.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Rosary at Mam\u00e3 Muxima Shrine<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the afternoon, amid the enthusiasm and devotion of 30,000 people gathered at the historic <strong>Mam\u00e3 Muxima Shrine<\/strong>\u2014a place of worship dating back to the 17th century and associated with the era of Portuguese colonization\u2014the Pope led the recitation of the Rosary. The mysteries were introduced by a young man, a child, a family, a religious sister, and a seminarian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his address, delivered in Portuguese, <strong>Pope Leo XIV<\/strong> called for a renewed commitment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cto love every person with a mother\u2019s heart, in a concrete and generous way,\u201d<\/em> and to dedicate oneself <em>\u201cespecially to the poorest.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is love that must triumph, not war!
