Ed Liptak, SDB

At the Last Supper, Jesus, while asserting to His Disciples His Oneness with the Father and that he was leaving them, made a solemn promise, “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you forever,” the Spirit to be with them so they would not be orphans (See Jn 14:15-18). The horror of the Passion, the darkness of death and the tomb, the brightness of the Resurrection and Ascension, the Novena of waiting in prayer, all passed. And the Spirit came!

Acts of the Apostles details the event. The sound of the wind filled the whole house where the Disciples were and all around it. Inside, visible and invisible things happened. Flames hovered over all present. As Jesus promised, the Spirit would be in them and stay. Fear turned to boldness, and they confronted the crowds drawn there by the sound of the wind. The Apostles’ Galilean accent was gone, and the crowd from surrounding countries and regions heard them in their own language and dialect. Something like three thousand of them sought to be baptized with water and the Spirit. Our Church was being born!

“Brothers and sisters,” wrote St. Paul, “No one can say, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ except by the Holy Spirit.” Thus, only by the gift of the Spirit can we believe that Jesus was and is God among us. Paul also asserts, “There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, different forms of service, different workings, but the same Spirit, Lord, and God who produces all of them in everyone. To each the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.” Each of us, then, ought to admire the gifts in one another, nothing to be proud or jealous about, for our gifts are in us by the good pleasure of God.

We are also reminded today of another precious gift of God to His Holy Church. The Father had sent Jesus to atone for the sinfulness of the human race and to reopen the gates of heaven. To help keep this in mind, the Church returns to St. John’s Gospel on Resurrection evening. John singles this one gift out. He wrote: “As the Father has sent me, so I send you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” It is a gift like none other.

¡Nuestra Iglesia estaba empezando a nacer!

By Fr.
