Ed Liptak, SDB

The Sacred Scriptures of this Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Jesus are so explicit that they ought to leave no doubt about what is hidden in the Bread and Wine, the Holy Eucharist. In Exodus, when the starving Jews saw the Maana, they asked exactly that: “What is this? ” Moses told them it was food sent by God (Ex 16: 15-16). Jesus started from this incident to say, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever“(Today’s Gospel). We Catholics accept the words of Jesus literally as He described a new channel of grace to safely journey through our desert of this life toward the glorious life to come.

Further in the Gospel, the good Lord increased His declaration to be the bread from heaven and said, “Whoever eats this bread will live forever.” He spoke of His future Passion too, that the bread He would offer was His Body, that without the Bread of His Body, nor the shedding of His Blood, there is no eternal Life. Also, those who partake of His flesh and blood will be raised on the last day. It is hard to think of greater promises the Lord could have made, nor to imagine anything stronger than that He and the Eucharist are One, and that He desires to share the joy of Life with Him in heaven.

The Deuteronomy reading can suggest that we compare ourselves and our own hardships on life’s journey, still managing to trust in God’s assistance as did those of old with their needs, whether water from rock or bread from heaven.

St. Paul sets the anchor of our faith firmly. With him, this we believe, solidly and unshakably: “The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because the loaf of bread is one, we think many are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf.” Brothers and sisters, ought the meaning of Christ, who taught Paul, and the interpretation of the Fathers of our ancient Christian Faith, now be reinterpreted?
Said Christ:

“This IS my Body;” “This IS my Blood.”
(Mt 26:26; 28)

“Jesus, I believe in You, I hope in You, I love You.”
(Fatima Angel Adoring the Bread and Wine)

By Fr.
