Ed Liptak, SDB –

Jeremiah had just prophesied the fall of Jerusalem and the Babylonian captivity. Heartbroken, he even accused God of deceiving him into becoming a prophet. He tried to remain silent but lamented, “I am weary of holding it in; I cannot!” He went on to describe how he was persecuted, even being locked in the stocks overnight. Yet God’s prophetic power welled up within him, giving him even more details about the destruction awaiting Jerusalem, the nation’s leaders, and the Temple. He was denounced, but Jeremiah felt the LORD’s protection and cried out: “The LORD is with me like a mighty champion; my persecutors will stumble and not prevail.” The persecutions continued, but in the midst of them he proclaimed: “Sing to the LORD, praise the LORD, for He has rescued the life of the poor from the power of evildoers!”

Saint Paul taught Christians that through Adam, the father of all humanity, sin and death entered the world and corrupted the entire human race, even those who had not personally sinned. Death was present, along with Adam’s sinfulness. In God’s goodness, a second Adam came: Jesus Christ, God in human form. Humanity needed Christ, the God-Man, to atone for the sins of the world. Human beings lived and died under the shadow of the sin of one man. Yet we are encouraged by Paul’s words: “How much more did the grace of God and the gracious gift of the one man Jesus Christ overflow for the many?” In this way, Paul explained the curse of original sin and our need for Christ.

In Matthew’s Gospel, we have seen Jesus generously share His mission with the Twelve. Now we hear the encouragement He gave them. “Do not be afraid,” He told His disciples when they faced persecution, because God knows the depth of evil in their persecutors. What you have heard from Me in darkness or in whispers, proclaim from the housetops. Do not be afraid. People may kill the body, but they cannot kill the soul. God alone can destroy both soul and body in hell. Your Father knows when a sparrow falls to the ground. He counts every hair on your head. Therefore, brothers and sisters, take what Jesus said to the Apostles as spoken also to you: “Everyone who acknowledges Me before others, I will acknowledge before My heavenly Father. But whoever denies Me before others, I will deny before My heavenly Father.” Trust in that promise.

“Lord, in Your great love, answer me.”

Jesus chose not to speak or act alone. Thus, at the beginning of Matthew’s Gospel, He called Matthew, a collector of Roman taxes—a scandal in the eyes of the Pharisees. Then Jesus forgave a paralytic’s sins before healing him, which provoked even greater outrage. Nevertheless, Matthew went on to list the twelve Apostles. He placed himself alongside Thomas the skeptic and did not hesitate to call Judas a traitor. In spite of everything, Jesus shared His mission with them. He sent them forth and commanded them: “As you go, make this proclamation: ‘The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.’ Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons.” They had received freely; they were to give freely. Jesus was not selfish.

By Fr.
