The session was chaired by Fr. Juan Pablo Alcas Michilot, Provincial, together with the Provincial Councilors, who undertook a long journey through the jungle via Calca, Lares, and Amparaes to reach this historic Salesian mission.

The host community, led by Fr. Domingo Yanqui, welcomed the Council along with the Salesians Fr. Dario Sobczak, Fr. Guillermo Maza, and Fr. Pablo Tran. The meeting provided an opportunity to share in the daily life of a mission that, for decades, has been proclaiming the Gospel in one of the country’s most remote regions.

The Provincial Council began with a time of prayer and reflection, invoking the light and wisdom of the Holy Spirit to guide the proceedings. Fr. Alcas Michilot then presented the main items on the agenda, highlighting in particular the report on the provincial visit carried out during the preceding days in Monte Salvado. During the working sessions, he also presented various topics of provincial importance.

One of the central themes was reflection on the future of this missionary presence. As is well known within the Salesian Family, the Monte Salvado community is currently engaged in a process of discernment. However, rather than adopting a pessimistic outlook, the Council sought to examine, with serenity, responsibility, and hope, possible paths forward to continue supporting the Indigenous communities and local population.

The visit also offered an opportunity to recognize the tremendous evangelizing work carried out by generations of Salesian missionaries who, through sacrifice and fidelity, have sown the seeds of faith and promoted human development throughout this jungle region. Listing all the Salesians of Don Bosco who have served in these lands would require many pages, but two are remembered in a special way: Fr. Horacio Loi and Fr. David Fachinello.

Despite logistical difficulties and current challenges, Monte Salvado continues to be a living sign of the Salesian commitment to the peripheries and to places where the Church’s presence remains urgently needed.

The session concluded with a renewed provincial commitment to discern the future with a pastoral vision, listening carefully to the realities on the ground and always seeking the greater good of the mission entrusted by God and envisioned by Don Bosco for the peoples of the Amazon.

At the conclusion of the visit and the Provincial Council sessions, one conviction remained shared by all participants: the most important aspects of a mission cannot always be expressed through figures, reports, or statistics. The well-known words of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, author of The Little Prince—“What is essential is invisible to the eye”—were experienced firsthand by the members of the PER Provincial Council during their time in Monte Salvado. There they encountered the simple faith of dozens of communities, the silent gift of the hundreds of missionaries who have served there, the daily and urgent challenges of evangelization, and the hope of the people, who continue to believe in the Salesians and in the Missions of the Peruvian Jungle.

“The most important decisions for the mission arise from attentive listening, from being close to people, from sharing in the life of communities, and from contemplating reality as it is. Only through this direct encounter is it possible to discern, with responsibility and hope, the paths that God continues to open for the Salesians of Don Bosco today in these mission lands,” concluded the Salesians of the PER Province.

(ANS – Monte Salvado) – On June 17–18, 2026, the Council of the Salesian Province of St. Rose of Lima in Peru (PER) met at the Mary Help of Christians missionary community in Monte Salvado, one of the most emblematic, challenging, and historic Salesian presences in the Peruvian jungle.
