Innocent Bizimana, SDB, Regional Councilor for the Africa East and South Region, reflected on the witness of Salesian confreres serving in some of the world’s most challenging mission territories.

Remaining Faithful Amid War, Disease, and Crisis

Fr. Bizimana described the paradox of missionary life in areas affected by war, disease, and humanitarian emergencies. While these situations present immense challenges, he noted that they also reveal the remarkable strength and resilience of the confreres. For security reasons, he explained, many details of their work cannot be shared publicly.

In conflict zones, even routine travel requires careful planning and consultation within the community. He also highlighted the vital work of Salesians who provide water to refugee camps, reminding listeners that access to clean water is often a matter of survival and its true value is most evident where it is scarce.

Standing with Those Most in Need

Reflecting on a recent visit to South Sudan, Fr. Bizimana spoke of the strong spirit of communion among the various branches of the Salesian Family, including the Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB), the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (FMA), and the Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians.

He praised the dedication of the Salesians serving in Juba, Kwajok, Wau, Tonj, Maridi, and a new mission near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Despite ongoing conflict, disease, and the threat of Ebola in neighboring regions, the confreres remain steadfast in their mission.

“No one wants to leave and abandon the children, young people, and families who are walking alongside them,” Fr. Bizimana said.

Bringing Hope Through Solidarity

Fr. Bizimana emphasized the importance of the Congregation’s continued support for confreres serving in areas affected by war, natural disasters, and disease. He compared that solidarity to visiting someone in a hospital or prison—simple acts of presence that communicate hope and encouragement.

He also expressed gratitude to the Don Bosco Network and to the Rector Major for their ongoing concern, support, and responsiveness during times of crisis.

Concluding his reflection, Fr. Bizimana encouraged the entire Congregation to remain attentive to the needs of their confreres and to support them whenever possible, enabling them to continue their mission of bringing hope to those they serve.

As he concluded, he recalled Don Bosco’s enduring commitment to the young and the poor, affirming that remaining close to those most in need “is, and always will be, our blessing.”

(ANS – Rome) – The summer series of “goodnights” offered to the Salesian community at the Salesian Headquarters in Rome continued on July 9, when Fr.
