(ANS \u2013 Rome) \u2013 The Rector Major of the Salesians of Don Bosco<\/strong>, Fr. Fabio Attard<\/strong>, with the consent of the other members of the General Council<\/strong>, appointed Fr. Thomas Vu Kim Long, SDB<\/strong>, as the first Superior of the newly established \u201cOur Lady of La Vang\u201d Vice Province<\/strong> (Northern Vietnam) for the six-year term 2026\u20132032<\/strong> during the session held on July 10, 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fr. Thomas Vu Kim Long<\/strong>, born in Hung Yen on March 27, 1954<\/strong>, entered the \u201cDon Bosco\u201d Minor Seminary<\/strong> in Thu Duc in 1965<\/strong>. After his novitiate at Tram Hanh (Da Lat), he made his First Profession<\/strong> el August 19, 1973<\/strong>, in Thu Duc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He spent his post-novitiate in Da Lat (1973\u20131975<\/strong>) and completed his theological studies at Duc Huy. He made his Perpetual Vows<\/strong> el August 6, 1979<\/strong>, at Duc Huy. He was ordained a deacon on June 25, 1993<\/strong>, at Xuan Hiep and a priest on May 30, 1994<\/strong>, at Vinh Long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his Salesian ministry, he has held numerous positions of responsibility. He served as Rector at Duc Huy (1994\u20131999<\/strong>) and at Hoc Mon (1999\u20132001<\/strong>), then as Parish Priest at Duc Huy (2002\u20132006<\/strong>). He served as Rector of the Pre-novitiate at Cau Bong (2006\u20132009<\/strong>) and of the \u201cDon Rua\u201d Post-novitiate<\/strong> in Da Lat (2009\u20132015<\/strong> and again 2021\u20132024<\/strong>). He was also Rector at Dong Thuan (2015\u20132021<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the provincial level, he served as Provincial Councillor for Youth Ministry<\/strong> (1996\u20132002<\/strong>), Councillor for the Salesian Family<\/strong> (2002\u20132008<\/strong>), Vice Provincial<\/strong> (2008\u20132015<\/strong>), and Provincial Councillor for the Missions<\/strong> (2015\u20132017<\/strong>; 2021\u20132024<\/strong>). He is currently Provincial Delegate<\/strong> for the \u201cOur Lady of La Vang\u201d Delegation<\/strong> (2024\u20132027<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many years, the Salesian mission in Northern Vietnam operated as a delegation of the Vietnam Province<\/strong>. Following the Extraordinary Visitation conducted by the former General Councillor for Missions<\/strong>, Fr. Alfred Maravilla<\/strong>, and upon the recommendation of the former Rector Major, Cardinal \u00c1ngel Fern\u00e1ndez Artime<\/strong>, the General Council<\/strong> formally established the Delegation as a Vice Province<\/strong> during its April 2026<\/strong> session. After a consultation process carried out by Fr. William Matthews<\/strong>, General Councillor for East Asia\u2013Oceania<\/strong>, on July 10, 2026<\/strong>, the Rector Major appointed Fr. Thomas Vu Kim Long<\/strong> as the first Superior of this new Vice Province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In announcing the appointment to the confreres in Vietnam, the General Councillor for the East Asia\u2013Oceania Region<\/strong>, Fr. William Matthews<\/strong>, expressed his congratulations and gratitude to Fr. Long<\/strong> for the humility and willingness with which he accepted this responsibility. He also invited all the confreres to accompany him with fraternal support and prayer, so that he may faithfully and generously carry out the important mission of guiding, governing, and animating the new \u201cOur Lady of La Vang\u201d Vice Province<\/strong>, in service to the Congregation and the Church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In announcing the appointment, sincere gratitude was also expressed to the confreres who participated in the consultation, emphasizing the value of shared responsibility and communion in the life of the Congregation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Rector Major and the General Council<\/strong> extend their best wishes and blessings to the new leader of the Vice Province, invoking the intercession of Mary Help of Christians<\/strong> to accompany the journey of the Salesians of Northern Vietnam<\/strong> in their service to the Church and to young people, especially those who are poorest.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
