Salesian Historical Institute Introduces Its Mission to Newly Appointed Provincials<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

(ANS \u2013 Rome)<\/strong> \u2013 El July 17, 2026<\/strong>, at the Salesian Pontifical University<\/strong> in Roma<\/strong>, members of the Salesian Historical Institute (ISS)<\/strong> met with the nine newly appointed Salesian Provincials<\/strong> who had been participating in the orientation program held at Salesian Headquarters<\/strong>. The meeting provided an opportunity to present the mission, activities, and future vision of both the Salesian Historical Institute (ISS)<\/strong> and the Association of Salesian History Scholars (ACSSA)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The participants included Fr. Ashley Miranda<\/strong> (India-Bangalore, INB), Fr. Peter Chinweike Morba<\/strong> (Nigeria-Niger, ANN), Fr. Amelito Mel Racelis<\/strong> (Philippines South, FIS), Fr. J. Gaston Harisoa<\/strong> (Madagascar, MDG), Fr. Jos\u00e9 Laventure Ignacio<\/strong> (Ethiopia-Eritrea, AET), Fr. Dariusz Bartocha<\/strong> (Poland-Krakow, PLS), Fr. Ronilo Aguilar Javines<\/strong> (Philippines North, FIN), Fr. Domenico Saraniti<\/strong> (Italy-Sicily, ISI), and Fr. Doss Kennedy Jegadoss<\/strong> (India-Tiruchy, INT).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The session opened with a welcome from Fr. Aldo Giraudo<\/strong>, who was recently appointed Director of the ISS<\/strong>. Participants also expressed their gratitude to his predecessor, Fr. Thomas Anchukandam<\/strong>, who led the Institute from 2015 to 2026 and guided it through the significant transition from its former headquarters on Via della Pisana<\/strong> to its current location at the Salesian Pontifical University<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fr. Giraudo<\/strong> then outlined the history, mission, and current work of the Institute, highlighting its role in preserving, studying, and promoting the documentary heritage of St. John Bosco<\/strong> and the Congregaci\u00f3n Salesiana<\/strong>. Established following the 21st General Chapter<\/strong> (1978) and inaugurated in 1981 by Rector Major Fr. Egidio Vigan\u00f2<\/strong>, the ISS<\/strong> reports directly to the Rector Major<\/strong> and conducts research through its three sections: Don Bosco<\/strong>, Salesian History<\/strong>y Misiones Salesianas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among its principal commitments are the critical edition of Salesian historical sources, the promotion of scholarly research on Don Bosco<\/strong> and the Salesian mission, and the development of specialized bibliographic resources. The Institute also publishes the Sources, Studies and Bibliography<\/em> series, along with the semiannual journal Salesian Historical Research (Ricerche Storiche Salesiane)<\/em>, and regularly organizes conferences and academic meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Particular attention was given to the digital resources now available through the ISS-ACSSA<\/strong> website. Researchers and members of the Salesian Family<\/strong> can freely access an extensive collection of historical documents, including the critical edition of the first Salesian Constitutions<\/strong>, Don Bosco’s<\/strong> pedagogical and spiritual manuscripts, the complete 10-volume edition of his correspondence, and numerous documents related to the Misiones Salesianas<\/strong>. Fr. Francesco Motto<\/strong> also highlighted the scholarly significance of the online publication of Don Bosco’s<\/strong> complete correspondence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting also featured a presentation on ACSSA<\/strong>, which was founded in 1996 to foster historical research throughout the Salesian Family<\/strong>. Today, the Association has eight regional sections\u2014Africa-Madagascar<\/strong>, Argentina<\/strong>, Brazil<\/strong>, Ecuador<\/strong>, India<\/strong>, Italy<\/strong>, Poland<\/strong>y Espa\u00f1a<\/strong>\u2014and brings together 240 members, including Salesians<\/strong>, Daughters of Mary Help of Christians<\/strong>, lay scholars, and members of other religious congregations. As part of the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Salesian Missions<\/strong>, ACSSA<\/strong> also organized five continental seminars, each attracting broad participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the priorities discussed during the meeting was the invitation for every Salesian Province<\/strong> to appoint a Salesian responsible for safeguarding archival heritage and promoting research into the history of the local Salesian mission<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program concluded with a presentation by Fr. Stanis\u0142aw Zimniak<\/strong>, ISS Coordinating Secretary<\/strong>, of the official ISS-ACSSA<\/strong> website. He emphasized that the portal has become an important international resource for Salesian historical research<\/strong>, providing free access to books, journals, and specialized resources while offering regular updates on the initiatives of both institutions.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
