Romeo Salami, SDB, Bro. John Njuguna, and lay collaborator Ms. Joan Macharia, in a significant encounter that reaffirmed the growth of Salesian Technical and Vocational Education and Training in Africa and its connection with the broader journey of Don Bosco Tech Global.

The meeting was held in Addis Ababa, a symbolic location where DB Tech Africa was launched in 2008. Bro. John Njuguna recalled key moments in its history, highlighting the continuity of the project and the central role of the DB Tech Africa leadership team in coordinating vocational training initiatives across the continent.

The gathering also strengthened the relationship between DB Tech Africa and the Youth Ministry Sector, emphasizing that technical and vocational education must remain firmly rooted in the Salesian educational-pastoral mission.

Vocational Training Within Salesian Youth Ministry

Fr. Rafael Bejarano presented the Oratorian Criteria and the essential elements that characterize every Salesian work as part of Salesian Youth Ministry. Drawing from the Church’s and Salesian Magisterium, including the Constitutions and Regulations, he situated Vocational Training Centers within the overall mission of the Salesian Congregation.

He emphasized that Salesian vocational training is not simply preparation for employment. It is an educational-pastoral environment in which young people are accompanied toward integral human, Christian, social, and professional growth, with particular attention to those who are poor and vulnerable.

The Journey of Don Bosco Tech Global

Fr. Joebeth Vivo, a collaborator with the Youth Ministry Sector, presented the journey that has led to the current development of Don Bosco Tech Global. He recalled that this process began with earlier efforts promoted under Fr. Miguel Ángel García, then General Councilor for Youth Ministry, to strengthen the accompaniment and coordination of Salesian Vocational Training Centers worldwide.

This journey has continued and strengthened under the leadership of the current General Councilor for Youth Ministry, Fr. Rafael Bejarano. One of its major milestones was the Don Bosco Tech World Visioning, held in Rome from March 16–20, 2026.

The World Visioning brought together regional coordinators, collaborators, mission offices, and Salesian leaders to reflect on the identity, mission, structure, and strategic direction of Salesian TVET worldwide. It reaffirmed that Salesian TVET is an educational-pastoral mission rooted in Don Bosco, focused on integral formation, accompaniment, professional quality, advocacy, collaboration, and social impact.

The meeting also identified the need for a stronger global identity, greater cross-regional networking, reliable data, quality assurance, minimum standards, and a simple structure that operates through existing Salesian bodies.

From Rome to Samoëns and the Next Steps

Fr. Joebeth explained that the results of the World Visioning were subsequently affirmed and approved during the DB Tech Global meeting in Samoëns, France, in June 2026.

At that meeting, the group approved the common Vision-Mission Statement and adopted the 4S Core Values: Salesianity, Synergy, Social Impact, and Sustainability. These values express the identity and direction of the emerging global network and provide a common reference for the different DB Tech regions.

He also reported on the latest stage of the process: the presentation of the proposed Don Bosco Tech Global Minimum Standards and KPI Framework. The framework is organized around six pillars: Brand Identity and Advocacy; Governance and Compliance; Partnerships and Ecosystem; Regional and Industry Alignment; Sustainability and Growth; and Innovation and Digital Transformation.

The proposed KPIs and Minimum Standards are now open for discussion and consultation at the regional and provincial levels. This process will allow the different regions to evaluate their feasibility, adapt them to local contexts, and provide feedback before final approval.

Africa and Europe in a Global Network

The Addis Ababa meeting highlighted the importance of stronger coordination between global, regional, and local entities, particularly in Africa and Europe.

Africa brings to the network extensive experience in responding to a rapidly growing young population, employment challenges, diverse educational systems, and the need for vocational training that can contribute directly to social and economic transformation. Since 2008, DB Tech Africa has gained significant experience in coordinating Salesian vocational initiatives across multiple countries.

Europe, meanwhile, contributes established models of vocational education, quality systems, institutional and industry partnerships, innovation, and adaptation to changing labor markets.

The value of Don Bosco Tech Global lies in connecting these diverse experiences. Its purpose is not to impose a uniform model, but to create a shared Salesian direction in which Africa, Europe, and other regions can learn from one another while respecting their different realities.

The meeting therefore reaffirmed the importance of synergy among the Youth Ministry Sector, Don Bosco Tech Global, regional networks, Provinces, local Vocational Training Centers, Salesians, lay collaborators, industry partners, and young people themselves.

For DB Tech Africa, meeting again in Addis Ababa—the place where its journey began in 2008—was both a recognition of what has been achieved and a renewed commitment to the future of the Salesian mission.

(ANS – Addis Ababa) — Fr.
