Since this is a huge topic, for the coming months, our Care Ministry will begin a series of what I call \u201dDiabetes 101\u201d. We will seek out pertinent educational information from programs with the best practice.<\/p>\n<p>Here is \u201cA little summary of how our pancreas and liver work from the Mayo Clinic.\u201d Functions of the pancreas in relation to Type 2 Diabetes:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mayoclinic.com\/health\/type-2-diabetes\/DS00585\/DSECTION=causes\">http:\/\/www.mayoclinic.com\/health\/type-2-diabetes\/DS00585\/DSECTION=causes<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The role of glucose<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Glucose-a sugar- is a main source of energy for the cells that make up muscles and other tissues.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Glucose comes from two major sources: food and your liver.<\/li>\n<li>Sugar is absorbed into the bloodstream, where it enters cells with the help of insulin.<\/li>\n<li>Your liver stores and makes glucose.<\/li>\n<li>When your insulin levels are low, such as when you haven\u2019t eaten in a while, the liver breaks down stored glycogen* into glucose to keep your glucose level within a normal range.<\/li>\n<li>Glycogen is the analogue of starch: when the body doesn\u2019t need to use the glucose for energy, it stores it in the liver and muscles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>How insulin works<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Insulin is a hormone that comes from the pancreas, a gland situated behind and below the stomach.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The pancreas secretes insulin into the bloodstream.<\/li>\n<li>The insulin circulates, enabling sugar to enter your cells.<\/li>\n<li>Insulin lowers the amount of sugar in your bloodstream.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As your blood sugar level drops, so does the secretion of insulin from your pancreas<\/p>\n<h3><strong>How your body works<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Normally, your body changes most foods into glucose (sugar). <strong>Insulin helps glucose move <\/strong><strong>from your blood into your cells<\/strong> where it can be used for energy. When you have <strong>diabetes<\/strong>, your body does not use food properly for energy, <strong>so glucose builds <\/strong><strong>up in the blood. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The Care Ministry wants to emphasize that this article is not meant to be your medical advice.
