It was at the same time both simple and  profound. Three key factors were on display  representing three essential elements of the  Salesian booth at the LA Religious Education  Congress 2023: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1) The Salesian name or \u2018brand,\u2019  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2) Education of the young and  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3) Don Bosco appearing behind the shoulder\u00a0 of the towering statue of a life-size Mary, Help of Christians\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hearts Accompanying Hearts <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One key lesson was being taught: An\u00a0 inspired combination of identity, devotion\u00a0 and educational mission continues to move\u00a0 the hearts of people open to making the\u00a0 journey into the mystery of God through their\u00a0following of Christ.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By far the majority of those who stopped by  the booth were good, committed, and faith filled lay people, open to God being in their  daily lives and consequently continuing to be  that \u201cyeast in today\u2019s human family\u201d (2023  Strenna).  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a truly humbling experience to be in that\u00a0 booth on two levels. In the first instance the\u00a0 experience of devotion to the figure of Mary\u00a0 was almost tangible. She attracted visitors\u00a0 and then drew them in. Her significance as\u00a0 \u201cHelp of Christians\u201d was real to many and as\u00a0 if affirming her presence one more time. The\u00a0 image of Don Bosco behind her right shoulder\u00a0 confirmed the awesome reality that true\u00a0 devotion engenders hope and entrustment to\u00a0 God. True, there were a few who did not know\u00a0 her immediately, yet still they were drawn by\u00a0 the need for that same hope and entrustment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the simple act of taking a slip of paper\u00a0and writing the name or need that each one had\u00a0in their hearts, and the equally unpretentious\u00a0act of offering this prayer, entrusting this need\u00a0to Mary to bring to her Son, Jesus.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking from Deeply Within <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From inside the booth, we had the vantage point of seeing the faces, the expressions, the intensity and the demeanor of each one as they presented their petitions. From inside the booth, we witnessed the devotion and the love so obviously intermingled with the pain and the tears of people burdened by their own personal stories.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outside: An Atmospheric River<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While outside of the booth, and even the  convention center, California was once again  experiencing another \u2018atmospheric river\u2019 of  rain and wind; from inside the booth we were  experiencing a different and maybe even  greater atmospheric river of our own.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside: A Devotional River <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For, from inside the booth, we were witnessing\u00a0 a devotional river of the world\u2019s problems\u00a0 being entrusted in faith to God\u2019s goodness,\u00a0 God\u2019s love for each one of us. From inside the\u00a0 booth, we became a container of hope and a\u00a0 receptacle of boundless love simply by being\u00a0 present, fully and wholeheartedly present to all\u00a0as Salesians.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Identity, Devotion, Educational Mission <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From inside the booth, we could not help but  become aware that the combination of identity,  devotion, and educational mission at the heart  of our Salesian endeavors is as necessary  today as it was when first it began to evolve  all those years ago. Indeed, perhaps we were  having confirmed for us that the Salesian  charism continues to grow and evolve to  the degree that we remain among the people  of God, encouraging and loving them to the  fullness of life promised to us by Jesus. Truly  the experience of recognizing God at work in  our lives is at the heart of our Salesian Mission  today.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To the extent that we continue to take any and  all opportunities to inspire, encourage and  even cajole our young people especially, to  live for each other and for others with love and  devotion and hope we shape the future faith of  the generations to come. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
