She arranged not only passing meals for him, but also set up a spare room for any time he passed. God wished to reward her hospitality, and he sent word through his prophet that she and her husband must rejoice, for “This time next year you will be fondling a baby son.”

That is a preview of this week’s Gospel. Rejoice. “Sing the goodness of the Lord!”

St. Paul also calls for rejoicing: “You too must think of yourself as dead to sin and living for God in Christ Jesus.” We ought to rejoice, because we have been chosen by God to be baptized, buried in the death of Christ, raised from the baptismal waters to live a new life of grace, God alive in us. Furthermore, raised to eternal life, because that is where God’s beloved Son, Jesus Christ, lives, and we cannot be separated from our Life and our Truth!

St. Peter chimes in: “Announce the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light” (1 Pt 2:9). Be a joyful Christian community!

What about the Gospel? Rejoice? Be Joyful? Yes! For, if ever we must choose between God or any other, we must choose God. What? Choose Him rather than father or mother? Yes, if it comes to that. And then, we are not worthy to follow Christ if we don’t accept our cross, our trials? Yes, because trials are ugly and valueless, but can be given value by joining them to Christ who suffered for our salvation. Are we so aware of the goodness of this life that we lose sight of the life to come? No! Absolutely, No! Choose the way of God over any wealth or pleasure of this life.

It is not a weak Jesus that Matthew portrays. Jesus had imparted to his Apostles, Matthew among them, many astounding privileges—they would work signs and wonders; they would heal the sick, the blind and the lame. But he did not want them to preach a way false to the realities of this world. Attractions lie all around them. There would always be temptations leading towards a life filled with ease and comfort. They would tempt them, and they tempt us still. Yet, it is a life that Jesus wants to be strong, built upon true human dignity. And there is a life to come. “Whoever loses his life for my sake will find it,”…“He will surely not lose his reward.” That is the fullness of JOY in the Life to Come!

AMEN!
