As He freed others, so He would free us from the captivity, burdens, and distractions of this world. We seek to keep our hope and trust in Him. We beg that faith in Him and His Son sent to redeem us might not fail. We look forward, trusting that He will keep all of His promises. We want to be careful, for deep within us we hope for eternal salvation.

Our readings this Rejoice Sunday open with a passage from Isaiah that Jesus knew well. The passage is filled with promises of the Messiah’s times: good news for the poor, liberty for captives, sight for the blind, freedom for the oppressed, and that the time for salvation had come. This time of great joy Jesus openly claimed was for Himself. Instead of being joyful, and perhaps this is a strong warning to us, his townsfolk wanted more signs and were angry with Jesus when he refused. They were so angry that they took him to the brink of a cliff ready to throw him over it, but Jesus walked through their midst and went away. We want our Christmas to be “Merry and Bright.” But we must not lose Jesus by our misbehavior.

St. Paul unmistakably calls for that honorable conduct. He too cries out, “Rejoice always,” and quickly he adds, “Refrain from every kind of evil.” The secret of unshakeable happiness, which we often call peace of mind, does not consist of easy submission to temptation, resulting in a tormented soul. During these preparation days for the Holy Day of the Christ Child’s birth, the words of St. Paul spoken so long ago are still true. Do you want to have a happy Christmas? Then, says Paul, “Be preserved blameless for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”It is a crooked and shadowy life which we must avoid. This Sunday of rejoicing John the Baptist, with his prophetic voice warns, “Make straight the way of the Lord.” John called him the Light and asserted that Jesus, not he, was the Messiah. It is Jesus who leads us out of darkness into light. Light reveals, and Christmas shows who Jesus is, the Light from heaven revealing the way to salvation. Only sin can darken our Christmas.

By Fr. Ed Liptak, SDB Third Sunday of Advent B: — Last year, ‘A,’ we heard Rejoice!
