A Lenten Prayer for Salesian Youth Leaders

(Bellflower, California) – As we enter the season of Lent, we are all invited to reflect on the significance of the number 40, which marks a period of renewal and transformation. In Scripture, the number 40 carries profound spiritual meaning, often representing a time of testing, preparation, and purification. Jesus spent 40 days in the desert, fasting and praying, as he prepared for his public ministry (Matthew 4:1-2). Similarly, the Israelites wandered for 40 years in the desert, a journey of conversion that was meant to prepare them to enter the Promised Land (Numbers 14:33-34). Even Moses spent 40 days on Mount Sinai receiving the commandments from God (Exodus 34:28). Lent, too, calls us into a season of conversion, inviting us to reflect on our own spiritual journey and transform our hearts.

This year, 2025, is especially significant as it marks the 40th anniversary of the Salesian Youth Leadership Conference (SYLC), a program dedicated to empowering young people to become agents of transformation in their communities. Through our Salesian mission to accompany the young, SYLC has helped shape youth leaders who live out the values of service, faith, and our Salesian Youth Spirituality. As we embark on this Lenten challenge, we are reminded of the transformative power of 40 — both as a time of spiritual renewal and as a call to action in the spirit of St. John Bosco’s vision for young people.
