My Dream is to Go to College!

By Ryan Soto

Intro: Ryan is a 17-year-old who has served two years as a volunteer at Camp Savio in Bellflower. CA. in the United States. Ryan’s dream is to attend college; as part of his application, Rayn wrote this letter explaining an example of his leadership experience in which he has positively influenced others. It is an example of Don Bosco’s dream being alive today.

Cheering loudly and giving 110%, 100% of the time, was Camp Savio’s maxim. None of this was my specialty until I stepped into the high-energy Salesian community, which forever changed my character. Camp Savio allowed many young people to come together and spread joy to younger TK through 8th-grade children during the summer.

While at Camp Savio, I was assigned to take care of kids from 7th grade up to 8th grade, organizing games and activities around the summer season. Camp Savio helped young kids learn vital life skills such as communication, expression of creativity, and leadership through arts and crafts, volunteering with other counselors, and collaborative activities among their peers in the same grade.

Many activities involved singing cheers loudly, a challenge for most kids wanting to stand out. As their mentor, I undertook the task of helping them break out of their shells. Despite personal discomfort, I ensured their active participation, leading by example and cheering with 110% energy. Beyond mentorship, I became a reassuring friend to these kids, I guided these young minds through various challenges, whether overcoming self-doubt, listening during romantic breakups, or encouraging them to step outside their comfort zones for camp performances.

Post-camp, the reflections revealed the sincere impact of my influence. Many of the kids I mentored approached me, expressing how much I inspired them to follow in my footsteps, taking up the counselor position for their next camp year. This experience is a testament to my leadership, showcasing how I positively influenced others, aided in dispute resolution, and consistently contributed to group efforts to provide a safe camp for the kids.
