(Bellflower, California) – Wednesday, March 12, 2025, marked a significant milestone in our history. Exactly 128 years ago, the first group of Salesian missionaries arrived in San Francisco, igniting a mission that continues to thrive across the United States. Led by Father Raphael Piperni, they took charge of Saints Peter and Paul Church at 1100 Dupont Street, dedicating themselves to serving the Italian immigrant community.
Their journey was far from easy. Upon arrival, they found an unwelcoming environment parish in disrepair and a community that felt distant. Yet, through faith and dedication, they revitalized the church, transforming it into a vibrant center for worship and community life. Their perseverance laid the foundation for the growth of the Salesian mission in our country.
At the congregation level, we have been reflecting on three key themes: Giving Thanks, Re-Thinking, and Re-Igniting.
- Give Thanks – Today, we express our gratitude to those early Salesians. Because of their sacrifices and commitment, we can continue serving young people across the United States.
- Re-Think – How can we carry forward this legacy? What new ways can we embrace to keep our mission alive and relevant?
- Re-Ignite – Let us renew our love for Don Bosco’s vision and our dedication to the young, ensuring our mission continues to flourish.
