Youth Leaders Make a Difference at St. Mary’s Festival in Honor of Mary Help of Christians

(Los Angeles, California) – The Feast of Mary Help of Christians at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Boyle Heights was celebrated as a parish family from Saturday, May 24 to Sunday, May 25, engaging many parish leaders, including young people. The weekend festival promised an array of food, fun, and entertainment for everyone.

Cultivating youth leaders in the Salesian communities of Boyle Heights, Luis Chacon, the Coordinator of Youth Ministry, praised the contributions made by so many young people:

“The youth, particularly from Salesian High School Bishop Mora, took the initiative to support us in ways that far exceeded expectations. They cleaned out storage areas that hadn’t been touched in years, actively led the Lotería game by calling out numbers and handing out prizes, and brought so much energy and joy to the event.

Some of these young leaders are from the Centro Juvenil de la Familia Salesiana, where they have received leadership formation, participated in our programs, and embraced youth ministry. Their continued desire to support, serve, and make a difference is a testament to their growth and commitment.

A special thank you to the Girl Scout Troop from the Salesian Family Youth Center, who spent the morning selling churros and raspados to support St. Mary’s Parish. Their dedication and teamwork were a key part of making this celebration a success.

These young people have so many gifts to offer, and their presence and leadership remind me why my work as the youth ministry coordinator at the Salesian Family Youth Center, St. Isabel, and St. Mary’s matters. This mission only has meaning when we truly empower young people to make a difference in their communities and to step out of their comfort zones.

After the festival wrapped up and all the food was gone, we shared a simple meal of Costco pizza together. Later, we headed to Venice Beach, where we played volleyball and created memories that will fuel the next chapter of our journey.
