From Tarshish in the west at the mouth of the Mediterranean to Lud of East Asia and all the Coastlands, says Isaiah, that is where the knowledge of the true God will prevail. And as the great Prophet declared, so it is, helped by the return from Persian captivity of Yahweh’s Chosen People. And we, with confidence, see our Church, how it has spread to Nation upon Nation. We Catholics read of Isaiah’s glorious ‘Mother Jerusalem’ as of our ‘Mother Church’
Joyfully we respond, “Praise the LORD, all you nations; glorify him, all you peoples!” The Psalm goes on, “Steadfast is [God’s] kindness toward us.” But it also reminds us, as we muse on ‘discipline’ and ‘suffering,’ that “the fidelity of the LORD endures forever.” God remains faithful to His promises of eternal life.
One might insist, “But why must we suffer?” Hebrews offers a reason, “My son, do not disdain the discipline of the Lord or lose heart when reproved by him; for whom the Lord loves, he disciplines; he scourges every son he acknowledges. Endure your trials as discipline.” If we are wise, we learn to accept suffering as purification, cleansing us, poor and sinful as we may be, to share eternal life with Him. Yes, in our day, ‘discipline’ is pain, but in eternity, love and peace. Have Faith! Pray for Faith.
In the 21st Sunday Gospel from Luke, we hear a terrible question from the crowd. It could mirror a thought of our own: ”Lord, will only a few people be saved?” Fortunately, the answer from Jesus was like, ‘Never Mind!’ But the gate is narrow, and many are not strong. So, “Strive to enter through the narrow gate.” Be careful not to beg, “Lord, open the door for us,” and, says Jesus, I must reply, ‘You were never mine.’ ‘I do not know where you are from. Depart from me, all you evildoers.”
“Will only a few people be saved? Jesus gives the final word: “People will come from the east and the west and from the north and the south and will recline at table in the kingdom of God.” But friends, please do be careful. “Some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.” It depends on us!

Del Oeste al Este y Más Allá

Desde Tarsis en el oeste en la desembocadura del Mediterráneo hasta Lud del este de Asia y todas las costas, dice Isaías, ahí es donde prevalecerá el conocimiento del Dios verdadero. Y como declaró el gran Profeta, así es, ayudado por el regreso del cautiverio persa del Pueblo Elegido de Yahvé. Y nosotros, con confianza, vemos a nuestra Iglesia cómo se ha extendido a una nación tras otra. Nosotros, los católicos, leemos de la gloriosa “Madre Jerusalén” de Isaías como de nuestra “Madre Iglesia”
Con gozo respondemos: “Alabad al Señor, naciones todas; ¡Glorificadlo, pueblos todos!” El Salmo continúa: “Firme es la bondad [de Dios] para con nosotros”. Pero también nos recuerda, mientras reflexionamos sobre la “disciplina” y el “sufrimiento”, que “la fidelidad del Señor es para siempre”. Dios permanece fiel a Sus promesas de vida eterna.
Uno podría insistir: “¿Pero por qué debemos sufrir?” Hebreos ofrece una razón: “Hijo mío, no desdeñes la disciplina del Señor, ni te desmayes cuando él te reprenda; porque el Señor al que ama, disciplina; azota a todos los hijos que reconoce. Soporta tus pruebas como disciplina. Si somos sabios, aprendemos a aceptar el sufrimiento como purificación, limpiándonos, pobres y pecadores como seamos, para compartir la vida eterna con Él. Sí, en nuestros días la “disciplina” es dolor, pero en la eternidad, amor y paz. ¡Ten fe! Ora por la fe.
En el Evangelio dominical 21 de Lucas, escuchamos una pregunta terrible de la multitud. Podría reflejar un pensamiento propio: “Señor, ¿solo se salvarán unas pocas personas?” Afortunadamente, la respuesta de Jesús fue como: ‘¡No importa!’ Pero la puerta es estrecha, y muchos no son fuertes. Entonces, “Esfuérzate por entrar por la puerta estrecha”. Ten cuidado de no suplicar: “Señor, ábrenos la puerta”, y, dice Jesús, debo responder: “Nunca fuiste mío”. “No sé de dónde eres. Apártense de mí, todos los malhechores.”
“¿Solo se salvarán unas pocas personas? Jesús da la última palabra: “Vendrán hombres del este y del oeste y del norte y del sur y se sentarán a la mesa en el reino de Dios”. Pero amigos, por favor tengan cuidado.”Algunos son los últimos que serán los primeros, y algunos son los primeros que serán los últimos”. ¡Depende de nosotros!
